Many of them carried umbrellas of West African kingship spread and hue ; others dandy ginghams little big- ger than parasols. A sore-vexed, silent, tobacco-smok- ing multitude, they plodded along to- ward Modder river between a line up- on either side of British soldiers. The column had space enough, for the guar- dian troops were seventy yards apart, but there was a small body in front as well as in rear, without outlying mount- ed vedettes. But the Boers had no heart to at- tempt to bolt in that weary, thirsty land. Besides not a few professed satisfaction at having been captured. Our soldiers chatted with the Boers, and the prisoners were occasionally colloquial and friendly, as I found my- self. There appears to be little doubt that the Transvaalers and Free Staters are not on the best of terms. In the front marched the Buffs as an advance guard, and two _ half-bat- talions of the guards went with them to Jacobsdal. From there Gen. Wavell provided another escort into Modder river. Halts were madé during the day and at sundown, when the Boers had their rations issued. At night the troops took care not to let any of the prisoners escape. Lord Roberts treated the leaders | with great courtesy, and the headquart- ers’ staff found breakfast and lunch for all of them, which the prisoners ap- parently thoroughly relished. Cronje, with his wife, grandson, and another lady, his secretary (Mr. Reiz,) Commandants Albrecht and Wolmar- ans, and the other leaders, went ahead seven hours before the main body started. They, however, rode on the same day into Modder River, and en- trained for Simon’s Town. A vast number cf Martini rifles were found in Gen. Cronje’s laager. This at first led us to believe that the Boers were running short of Mausers, but many of the Boer prisoners declare that they prefer the old arm, to which their men are more accustomed. The Boer guns, four Krupps and one “‘pompom,” which were captured, have all had their breech parts removed and thrown away. In more than one in- stance the damage was inflicted by the Boers after the white flags were hoisted. It is believed that the breech blocks of the cannon and many of the enemy’s rifles were thrown into the river. The small arms captured in- clude Mausers, Martinis, and Lee-Met- fords. The rifle ammunition numbers ever 100,00 rounds, besides many shells. The “pom-pom’s” casing had been broken by a shrapnel." Bishop Potter talked to representa- tives of the newspapers about his visits to the Philippines, Japan and India. The trip was made at the instance of the committee on increased ‘ responsi- bilities ofthe Protestant Episcopal Church. Hehad been most interest- ed, he said, in the condition of affairs in China and Japan. He had noticed a gradual friendliness between the two nations and prophesied that when Japan should have taught the Chinese the art of war, neither England, Russia nor Germany would decide the fate of the East. The Chinese did not love the Japanese, but, recognizing that they had nothing to hope from the European nations, were gladly estab lishing an entente cordiale with the Japs. — FOR SALE OR ——T0 LET That nicely situated resid. ence, with out buildings, on the Malpeque Road, one mile from Post office, with 9 or 32 acres of land, as desired, ‘Apply to J: T.PEARDON.
