The Liberal party may feel some-
what elated in securing four returns
in one day by acclamation in the
seven pending by-elections. Certainly
the Opposition will not End in the in-
cident much cause for exnltation. And
yet, when carefully examined the
situation alfords no other general in~
dication than that public sentiment
towards the respective parties stands
very very much as it did in 1896.

South Africa. He is opposed to our
taking part in Britain's wars, and
thinks Parliament should have been
consulted. - On this question be will
no doubt vote against the Govern-
ment while supporting them in other
matters.
