The Tuscan orps gave way before them, and indeed throughout the sve days’ fighting the Milanese and other Italian corps vehaved very badly. The whole brunt fell upon-the ? admontese, who were not aided as they ought tohave xeen by Lombards, or by Venetians, or by Romans. Stewart & Co., of this town, under the following cit- cumstances. It appears that a person calling himself William McDonald, of P. E. Island, had ‘represented -o Mr. B. Wier, Commission Merchant, Halifax, that ve had a considerable quantity of pork packed in pan-} cheons in P. E. Island, which he was desirous of put- tng into barrels, and bringing to Halifax for sale, and offered to consign it to Mr. Wier, on condition that he would charter’a small vessel for its conveyance, and Yienish him with barrels On this Mr. Wier ‘chartered # vessel called the Two Brothers, and despatched her ‘> P. E, [sland with the requisite barrels, and McDonald vrought the vessel to a small cluster of fstands called \Yood Islahds, on the south coast of P. E. Island; and having landed the barrels, proposed that as. there was! 9 shelter for the vessel, she should proceed to’ Pictou sed return by a certain day, when the’ pork would be picked, 'to take it on board.’ This was done, and on the vessel’s return, 163 barrels were taken to the beach, and conveyed on board by means of boats. ‘On its be- ‘og rematked that the barrels were hight, McDonald said that-he did not stop to weigh the pork, but had merely filled each barrel with pork and pickle, intend- ing to repack it in Halifax previous to its being sold. ‘The vessel then proceeded to Halifex, but’on arrival tiere some demur was made about the duty, and it was deemed advisable to consign the ¢argo'to Newfound-| themselves, but to their God and their fellow creatures?! and. It was accordingly consigned to Messrs, M. Stew-’ art & Co., with instructions from Mr. Wier to retain shout 50/ expenses incurred by him, the balance of the sett proceeds to be at the disposal of McDonald. The} vessel arrived here on last Saturday week, but urf€er one plausible pretext after another, McDonald, without exciung suspicion, put off the landing of the pork till) )sst Teesddy.
