NOTES AND COMMENTS ~The erdden death of the Grand Duke of Saxe- Coburg, resulting from parelysis of the heart, will be a heavy blow to our »ged and beloved Queen, avd will fill Great Britain as we!! as Germany with eadness. ve Dw e was formerly known as Prince Alfred Duke of Edinburgh. The Liberal party was never more hopelessly divided than itis now. joubdtful that the position of the Govern. ment has been strengthened by the pro- oo of Mr. Chamberlain to the Foreign Office, the triumph of the Conservatives of Great Britain seems to be a foregone conclusion, mot —The following grit members of the avalitv to present house of commons have already announced their iniention of not again presenting themeelves to their conetitu- ents for re-election : Mr. Bain (the Speaker.) Mr. Livingstone. Mr. Somerville. Mr, Suetsioger. Mr Britton. Mr. Hutchison. Mr Wood. Dr. Landerkin, Mr, Bostock. This, as we before remarked, is ti+ first low wash of a wave where soon sha!) rol! a human sea, — We have been asked if Toe Exam INER can explais what The Patriot meaut by publishing «a statement to the effect that there is no lawyer on the Opposition side on the Provincial Legislature. This question ought to be addressed to The Patriot. Certainly,Mr. A, A. McLean, Q. C., is in the Legislature and certainly be cecupies @ seaton the Opposition éide. Judging by the extent of his practice and | his posision at the Bar it is evident that Mr. McLean Sis generally regarded as a lawyer cf some ability. So far as we can learn, Mr McLean has never allowed @ pT suner to escaye unwhipt of justice on account of icapacity or csrelessness ; aud his condact in the Legielature hiougpcut thelast session won the ad- miration of bis friends and the respect of his opponents. We feel sure that any little eoncession to the conductors saving their expenses and add ing to their comfort will not be grudged by the public, so long as it does not con~ flict with the public interests. Agriculture And Manual Training Discussed. The class work of the Summer School commenced on Friday with a large attend- ance of members and enthusiastic stur dente. On accountof the work of organ- izing clasees e:c. vo field work was under taken the firet day. In the evening V. W. Chipman Erq. Secretary of Agriculture for Nova Scotia, gave a most interesting talk on ecience teaching in the schools and is effect upon the agricultural interests of the province. He pointed out that when the pupils of the school were taught the scientific priu ciples of plant life and com position of co1's intelligent farming would be greatly s\itou- lated. I. B. Kidner, Esq, recently arrived from England to organize Manual Training ifp Nova Scotia under the McDonald Slovd Fund, was the next speaker. He showed the objects to be arrived at in in(rqgducing manua! training in the echoole; also how it could be practically effeciea. Saturday in addition to class work a tramp was taken by tle echool along Bear River, and valuable collections of plants and rocks were made by the students. In the evening L. W. Bailey, LL. D., Geo- logist of the University of New Brun + wick, lectured on “How Continents are made.” Starting with the foundation of a continent he traced the work of the form- ation of the euperetructure and the fitting of the coatisent to become the abode of map, clearly showing that all the work of continent building was subordinated to the one idea of making a home for man- kind. Sunday was a high day for the sums mer echool. Special sermons were preached by Dr. Andrews, of Mount A!- lison, University and Dr.fReiretead, of Acadia University. The sermons bore directly upor the work of the echool, The perfect »greement of science and re velation when intelligently underetood was dwelt upon by both epeakere, and a. earnest plea made for ail to eeek the trath.
