Present8l Future of The Silver Fox Industry By Lt. Col o. A. MacKinnon, D. S. O The Provincial Live Fox Show at. Charlottetown November 10th ii to l4th brings very keenly to mu attention the fact that the cui- -,lninating point in the ranchers routine has pretty nearly arrived. By that I mean the pelting sea- ' son. Fox show Week somehow seems to focus practically everyone? attention on our unique and only industry outside agriculture and fishing-fox farming. How this , little province came to be so cur- , lously endowed is pretty well ‘ known to most of us, but just ‘.n passing it might be well to state that it had its origin some fifty years ago, when the late Sir ‘Charles Dalton purchased silver fox pups from Benjamin Haywood, who had dllg them out of a hole in the ground. Our red; have been pretty well cleaneu up and our silvers are now bred only in cap- ,tivity. But for the astuteness of Dalton it is a very grave question whether the silver fox industry would have progressed to its pre- lsent world wide prominence. or what was world wide prominence l‘ prior to the _start of the war. This was kept untlli i 4 1909 when Frank Tupiin, a nephew of one of the pioneers, sold ten pairs at $6.000 a pair to a, prince ‘County syndicate. The war was’ on.
