=e Letters 2. TRY TO AVOID USING THE PHRASE “OUR GENERATION” AS A FORM OF PUNCTUATION. It’s not necessary to have it in every sentence. 3. STOP TRYING TO BE SO EARNEST. If you spend all of your column space trying to be deep you'll end up writing claptrap like a review of Reality Bites. Now, if you adopt and incorporate some of this advice into your writing, then it should improve. Just remember that the entire world isn’t the fault of babyboomers. Of course, if you were intentionally writing this poorly to underscore some greater theme ina Hunter S. Thompson kind of deliberately absurd lifestyle report, then that would be different--but this hybrid bastardization of Douglas Coupland nd Hunter S$. Thompson doesn’t cut the vustard, Yours, eff Himelman — eating a dead pest X-Press, | would like to take this opportunity to elaborate on an article about UPEI football. This article was written by Dana Dennis in the March Ist edition of the X-Press. Dana Dennis said that it would be foolish for UPEI to increase athletic funding (for football) whereas other universities are contemplating removal of such funds. The article states that in a recent senate meeting at the University of Alberta, it was recommended (or suggested) that all funding for interscholastic sports be reduced until 1996, when it would be completely eliminated. This idea caused an uproar thoroughout the province of Alberta as it proved that varsity sports area neglectedarea of education, especially in the eyes of some University Intellectuals. We cannot let this happen at UPEI. A professor at the University of Alberta said “Athletics’ true value is educating the body, which arts does not.” Another professor at the University of Alberta said “It is short- sighted for Universities to target sports during . budget reductions because with ticket sales, locker rentals and facility fees, athletic departments are one of the few areas in a university capable of generating their own revenue.” Football was a scapegoat in 1979 as it was scrapped from. UPEI’s budget. Dana Dennis considered football as entertainment which would sacrifice education. That is a poor philosophical approach because sports are educational for the athlete. Reinstating UPE! football will not happen overnight. The group trying to reinstate the football Panthers is probably not going to go straight to the University without a helpful plan, which would take time to come up with. To:say it is not an issue would likely be wrong. It is more of-an issue as every day passes. The bottom line is that the eventual return of the UPEI football Panthers will:really benefit the University. This year, at St. FX, football attracted over a hundred students to enrol. Also this year, at St. Mary’s University, football helped in their enrolment by increasing it by more than a hundred students. We sit here at UPEI and complain about cuts and high costs thanks to enrolment decreasingand we wonder what we can do to stop rising costs! Football a luxury? | don't think so. It just might be a necessity. Sincerely, CM Stewart LRAT RETROSPECIMC BY SHANNON YOUNKER FRIENDS OF MINE HAVE BEEN raving about the Sunday Brunch Buffet at Rodd’'s Royalty Inn. After going along with them one week, | could easily see why. This is another place where a meal becomes an event. Rodd’s has a marvellous idea-- all you can eat for a single price. The variety is almost °verwhelming, and no one could say that there ‘as nothing that they liked on the menu. From Scrambled eggs and sausages to roast beef and Mashed potatoes with many things in between, one would have no trouble consuming their "ecommended daily allotment of calories at one sitting. | can justify the price easily by the ‘ray of food prepared, but | am spoiled, and *n the whole ! Would rather give my order to ‘Waiter than carry my own. On the plus side, this Way thereis no waiting for your meal to be TS WERK. Ropps ROAITY Inn cooked. As well, | know it’s what you must expect when you visit a buffet, but the fact that people are constantly walking around and talking must be a little frustrating to those who have to sit next to the serving tables. There is anice, casual atmosphere and the staff are very friendly and helpful, and always ready with a hot pot of coffee. A little hint, though: the earlier you make it, the greater the selection. As it gets close to 2:00, not everything may be replaced. Overall, | give Rodd’s Sunday Buffet four cookies out of five (5/5 for the food, 3/5 for price and atmosphere). RATING SYSTEM: 5 cookies: Better than Mom's home cooking : 4 cookies: Better than.the cafeteria, but not as,good as Mom's ; 2 3 cookies: Great if you're hungry and not fussy 2 cookies: Only if nothing else is open I cookie: Almost as good as Kraft Dinner
