McLean, of Brae, went ashore at that place on Friday and sprang aleak and damaged her rudder. At latest accounts she was full of water. From the Summerside papers we learn that the schooner Julian, of Cocagne, N. B., was wrecked at White’s Cove, Lot 7, on the same day. She wason her way to Miramichi fora load of oysters and was blown out of her course. The crew were saved. —_— s---— Fire at Sorris.—Mr. James McCor- mack, of Souris, we regret to hear, met with a serious loss by fire on Saturday evening about six o’clock. It seems that one of the boys went out into his barn with 8 lantern, which was accidentally upset, and in a few minutes the barn was in Hames. A shed which joined the barn and Mr. MeCormack’s bouse had to be torn down to save the dwelling from the flames. Everything in the barn was destroyed, including bay, wagons, sleighs, harness and farming implements. There was no insurance. FROM ALL POINTS OF THE COMPASS, Fifty Women Drowned Near Cairo, Avexaxpnia, Egypt, October 18.—A ferry boat having 60 passengers on board, was in collision to-day near Cairo with a steamer at anchor. The ferry boat over- turned and 50 persons on board, mostly women, drowned. ‘The Behring Sea Damages, Wasuixetox, Oct. 18—As Secretary Olney will leave for Boston next week, the preparation of the treaty to settle the damages growing out of the seizures in Behringsea wilt be postponed till the 28th, if that date is accept- able to the Canadian repre-entative, who wi!l be invited to be present. The Unfortunate Armenians. Consravtinopie, Oct. 17.—A few shops in this city kept by son re-opened yeste rday, all having been closed by order of the Armenian committee. For thie act of disovedience their owners were fined £15 sterling each, except in cascs ef three merchants, who were obliged to pay four hundred Turkish pounds each. For these acts of extortion several members of the committee were arrested. The Japanese Subduing Formosa. Hoxa Kone, October 18.—Advices from | Formosa state that the Japanese are gra- dually subduing the tribes which are op ' posing the Japanese ocenpation of that ‘island. Maprip, October 18.—Queen Regent Christina presided over a cabinet council held here yesterday, at which it was de- cided to summon 85,090 men for active military service before the close of the year. ‘Of this pumber 24,000 men will be assigned to the colonies. "The cabinet also decided to draft a bill dealing with the dynamite outrages which have been com- mitted by the insurgents in Cuba. Passenger Dies on the Train, Hatirax, N.S., Oct 18.—A passenger on the Dominion Atlantic Railway from Yarniouth to Halifax took a hemorrbage ' and instantly expired. There was nothing about him by which he could be identified. The emperor spoke briefly. Raising his voice at the close of his remarks, he declared that Germany had both the will and the power to keep Al-ace-Lorraine under all circumstances. The Mayor Wouldn't Sign the Bonds, Hauirax, Oct. 18.— Mayor Sterns of Dartmouth was asked by the town council ‘o sign debentures for $500 to make water connections in the new service. Mayor Sterns refused to sign these on the ground of economy. The town council last night gave lim three days to change his mind or application would be made to the su- preme court to compel him to sign the debentures, To-day Mayor Sterns resigned the mayeralty. Half Measure Reforms, Lonpox, Oct. 18.—The Globe, in an ar ticle commenting » upon the acceptance by the Sultan of Turkey of the new proposals submitted by the representatives of Eng land, France and Russia, says the terms | of the proposals are not known precisely, but they are certainly much less drastic than were the original ones.
