There are many indications that the northern portion of Cape Colony on the border of the Orange Free State, now being strongly invaded by the enemy, will be the scene of stir- ring events in the near future. Three railways from the coast afford lines of communication inwards* One of these extends from Cape Town north- easterly to Hopetown and thence I northward to Kimberly, Mafeking and Buluwayo. Other lines extend northward from Port Elisabeth and northeasterly from East London to- ward the Orange State Border and on through that state. These three rail- way lines are connected by cross rail- ways in Cape Colony, generally speak- ing from 40 to 50 miles south of the Orange Sta'e border. De Aar Junction is on the road from Cape Town to Kimberly and is still held by British forces. N aauw- port Junction is on the road from I Port Elisabeth, and is reported abiut to be evacuated by the British. from East- London, and has been evacuated by the British and occupied by the Orange State troops.~ The large British stores of guns, ammuni- tion and food supplies gathered th~ re are reported to have been re noved sixty miles southward. ‘ I These movements' show that the Orange State troops have not only _anticipated General Bul1er’s promised invasion, but have come forward Y along all the possible lines of his ad- vance to meet him. At this stage the aggressive movement against Cape Colony begins to assume proportions that will divide attention with the situation at Ladysmith. Town from day to day, and their rapid departure inland. They must quickly come into touch _with the invaders. l-._-Il . IF WHITE SHOULD RETREAT. “The Boers do not occupy `.any positions of advantage south of Lady- smith,” writes an Africander corres- pondent of an American paper, “bat apparently are confining themselves to the mountains on _ th; north and west, where they have mounted their heavy guns, and which are at least British camp. 1 “In case the:British should decide to evacuate Ladysmith and retreat towards Pietermaritzburg they will accomplish this move with compar- ative safeiy, inasmuch as the country south and east is open and free from hills and kopjes,- thus affording the best possible opportunities for oper- ations of their cavalry. Gnce on open ground the British cavalry. can hold their own against big odds of Boers, and will successfully cover the retreat of the infantry and heavy artillery. _ “Pietermaritzburg is a stronghold that the British will be able to main- tain against the largest force the Beers can hope to bring together so far from their own base of supplies' Not only is it a. .regular garrison town, but the sorr-iunding hills are well fortified with heavy guns. The majority of her citizens, may bs in igni rance of this; but if they would take a walk through the streets cf te~ capital of King’s County anytime after 10 p. m. their doubts would soon vsnish. . Now christian friends, I think it is time that our Christian Ministers. on I r‘rince Edward Island would head an' army, against the devil in this mootim- portant evil, since our goveinmelithis tailed to do so. Let all zealous workers ask themselves this question, “What would Jesus do,” and Prince Edward Island would soon be the *Garden -of the Gul! ” One thing, however, we should be thankful fur, is, that we have the Gtrannialv on our side. A paper that will st ind up for what is right. A Rnroamon The new held gun, which tires a shfapnel shpll, and which is in its per- fected state is now _being used for tho first time by the British in South Africa, is perhaps the most deadly weapon of modern warfare. Each gun can fi e twelve aimed shots a minute. and each .-hot carries 260 bulle`ts,weighing forty- two to the pound. The shrapnel shell consists of a piece ol steel tubing lil1'».»d with small balls. At lhe' head of the shell is a time fuse, which can be ad- justed to suit the range st which the gun is to he tired. This fuse ignites the sma‘l charge of powder which lies ln front of the bullets. The firing oi the guns ignites the fuse, which burns for the time for which it hai been set. _Itthen fi-es the powder. which bursts lhe shell and sends 260 bnllfls dying among toe enemy.
