"They're right at the edge Kitty, you've passed them." Then when she did not reply. "Kitty, Kittyl You mustn't go m there. Come backi" Like one possessed Kitty began to run, through the trees, stumbling across a brook, skirting dense uuder~ growth, farther and farther from the; hateful voice. It died away behind her. Still she ran on, ran until her breath came in gasps and she sank down on a fallen tree trunk, amid the startled stillness of the virgin forest. A NEW RESOLVE when she had caught her breath. Katherine got to her feet again. Sho had fled from the beach where the wrecked Falcon lay on an impulse. She was in wild rebellion against- Biil and Bill's orders and she had not cared at the time wha: happened to her, if only phe could escape from his hateful presence Now, as she looked about the mo: depths of the trees and bushes, a plan took form in her mind. She would explore the island. Per- haps she would find s. pisce where she ‘could stay alone. At any rate, she would know more about the sit- uation than she had known before. and exploring the island would be s far pieasantcr way of spending Lice day than carrying wood for Bill. There was light ahead 0f her and she made her way toward it, the trees growing thinner as she pro- ceeded. A flash of wings in the tree- tops betrayed a bird of brilliant plumage and Katherine gave an ex- clamation of pleasure. She followed the flight, of the brld with her eyes and saw it light on the branches of a short stocky tree near the clearing There it sat for a moment sud then flew to the ground and began pecking industrousiy at something under- neath the tree. Full of curiosity Katherine followed ~ it. The bird flew away with a squawk as she approached, so she picked up what it, had been feeding on. It was a melon-like object, heavy, and with a thiok rind. Looking upflfatherlne saw the tree was burdened with similar fruit. "Melons on a tree," she said aloud. "I wonder if this is something we could eat." She poked tentatively at the rind and then tried to bite lute the "melon." Her mouth was filled with ran starchy flesh and she hastily salt it out. "Doesn't taste much like a melon." she reflected. "Still, it mus: be something edible or the birds wouldn't come here." She discarded the melon-like ob- md her wnrus. an. ma": poisonous, but was reamured by s“. ing that many of the fruit wei-‘s iisii wen. lmawed by lulmsis from m: forest behind her. She chose another large mange, dwidins to take it back to camp Perhaps Bill would know what it was. Free of the trees, she walked more rapidly and soon cameagsin to] sand beach. She had crossed the island, and in a kind of despair stocll looking for the vastness of the water that stretched before her. Attila right was a hill and this she climbed, wishing now for the shoes she had left behind. Her feet hurt, her ieii were scratched by the brambles, and the sand, which persisted even to the crest of the hillfirrltloted m; skin. At the top of the hill grew s palm tree, standing like a sentinel alone. ‘Ihia was where Biiihad found m. cocosnuts and Katherine could see faint tracks leading w its base. Sev- eral ripe nuts lay on the ground and as Katherine turned one over she was startled by the quick flight of some small animal. Cliuging to the trunk and regarding her with startled wistful eyes was a female monkey. On the ground, clamoring for its mother, W" it blby monkey, no larger than a kitten. Apparently the mother wanted her child again but did nol dare come down for it. Katherine stooped sud picked the tiny creature up in her arms. m- stantly the mother set up a beseech- ing chatter, but Kaherine did no: heed her. She was entranced with“ efforts to nip her fingers with ifé sharp little teeth. “I'll take it back and make a pet of it," ghe decided. Bhadin! her eyes with one hand she made out a thin column of smoke, Bill's fire. "I'll go back around the beach," isha said aloud Then to the tiny monkey, "Collie along. Peanuts, I'll take you home."
