ST Gee, ee eee ne a a at ae Nemesia, When he aad she were ten aad eight fils littie wife was she ; And both were quite content to wait Till he a man should be, They played together as they grew ; A tyrant lord was he— They'd quarrel when the clock was two And make it up et three! At fifteen he on girlish toys Looks down with scornful mien ; And she disdains to play with boys At feminine thirteen, His matrimonial views are cool, At love he gaily mocks ; She boasts a dearest frie nd at school, And daily lengthening frocks! When twenty, sees him quite a man, Its. bliss has one alloy; She Jaughs at him behind her fan, And calls him such a boy, For she has lovers now galore, Who smiles and favors crave, And he who tyranniwed of yore Is now her humblest slave! They now are middle.aged ; "tis said His chin a beard pow covers ; And strange to say, she’s not yet wed, In spite of all her lovers! Bat vain for her to sighs for him, For so the story tells — Grown weary of caprice and whim He’s married some one else! — Chambers Journal, _—_—— eS + —- oe — Mark Twain From Another Point of View. —_——_ = “One of these,” said Mr. Falford, “who has made both fame and fortune, is Mark Twain (Sam Clemens.) 1} knew hint well. Me was a reporter on the Enterprise while I was a young boy setting type on the same paper. He hadasalary of $30 a week, There was a wide difference then between the man who wrote for the paper and the man who setthe type for it. While it is true, as I have said, that Mark Twain isone ofthe few men I knew at Virginia City who is to-day worth a fortune, and while it is equally true he has acquired fame as well, yet he made neither while out there and gave no hint that he would ever make them anywhere else.” “You never suspected, was a humorist?” “Never. [saw him every day and read everything he wrote for the paper, but | never suspected there was any- thing funny about him beyond a little drolloryin his manrer of speech. I think he got most of his jokes from a fallow in the efice we called Tyuthful James. His true name was Thomp- kins, and he wrote very fairly, but he was at his best when surrounded | by a lot of frieyds. He had an inexhaustible supply of jokes and storjes, and he toldthem all with in- imitable humor. He was thoroughly original, and was a noted char- actor in Virginia City. You will understand that there was a gentle sar- casm about the appellation Truthfal James. But Thompkins, with all his good stories, never amouuted to any- thing more than the good-natured, good-hearted joker of the Enterprise office, and he to-day unknown to either fame er fortune, but there is Mark Twain, by all mankind.” “Was Mark Twain well liked among his acquaintances ?” “No; he was rather uopopular. I did not like bim then, and I do not like him now. I dislike him so much that | never vead much he writes, but I think I can tell the truth about him, and Lam sure lam right when I say then, that he is he retains as friends to-day very few, if any,ot those who know him in Virginia City. ‘fo illustrate the truth of what I say, I will tell you of an incident that occurred just about the time he left Virginia City to go down to San Fras- cisco. There was a little town or camp, just outside of Virginia City, and the two places were separated by a deep gulch, and the road that crossed this was the scene of many a midnight murder and rebbery. Sdéme of the boys laid a plot to give Sam Clemens a good scare before he loft for San Francisco. The plan was to waylay him some nightas he passed a.ong this lonely road and take his watch, pistol and mouvey and return them a day or two later. Thenight came. He was com. ing home pretty late from the other side. Dbey boys knew he had a pistol, and it was a dangerous joke; but that was the sort o! “practical jokes _we all in- dulged in at that time. It would, of course, be necessary to get the drop on him, otherwise somebody would get hart. The plan worked al! right. They rushed out from behind a rock, with pistols cocked and levelled, and com- manded him to throw up his hands, which he did very promptly. There was nothing else todo. Ofcourse the beys were masked. They took every- thing he had, including a very common old silver watch, and he seemed to be right glad to get away with his life. The aext day he wrote a thrilling ar- ticle for the Lnterprise, giving a detail- ed account of the affair, abusing the supposed robbers with terific vengeance. The secret was kept dark uatil he was going to leave on the stage coach for Sin Francisco. Just as- Clemane was about to get on the stage, a committee of boys with very solemn countenances walked up to him and with a very formal speech presented him with a noat-looking case, which he supposed contained some pleasing memento by which his Virginia City friends wished to be remembored. You can imagine his surprise and the yell that went up from the crowd when he opened the Case aod round iaside the watch, pistol and small amount of monéy of which whose books are now read | erent’ 8 Faney Velvet Slippers, J he had bet robbed a few nights bathe | The driver cracked his whip and the coach went off with a whirl It waa the sort of & practical joke Clemens did not appreciate and it was the last he ever saw of Virginia City.” ><.
