—_ cata ea * ae oe . ; : } 4 } i sl a4 € * The Castaway’s Dream: {The following lines were written while | looking on a picture called “*‘The Castaway’s | Dream.” Being a wanderer from home, the | mind of the writer has often strayed back te | the scenes of happy chi'dheod, and seen in | imagi ation those pleasaot visions which glad- dened the heart of the poor Castaway.) The scene is on the ocean, The night is dark and drear,— A vessel's vainly trying, A rock bound coast to clear; The heaving billows rise and fall, As on todoom she’s sped; And swon the wild waves requiem Will sing o'er the silent dead, i | | j i | She's nearing fast; her doom is sealed; The rugged rocks are near, And the men are grouped upon the deck With faces blanched with fear. At last there comes that awful sound, — The timbers crash in twain, Aod piercing shrieks are heard above The roaring angry main. The storm has now subsided, The sea is calin once more; Aad see, there are two objects, Upon the dreary shore. One is a man; his hand is raised To shade his piercing eye, While on the sand beside him sleeps, A blue-eyed, rosy boy. They have escaped a watery grave, Perechance to starve and die, And wish that like their comrades they, Beneath the waves did lie. Bat peacably the ‘‘laddie” sleeps Asin a palace grand, And the sft sea breezes fan his brow, As it murmurs on the strand. A smile is on his countenance, As he dreams of happy home ; And in his visions he can see The fields he oft did ream— A mother, too, has come to meet Her blue-eyed wandering boy, And sisters, too, are hastening To share the rapturous joy. What pleasant hours he spends with them, He tells—his wanJerings o’er— How great his perils oft have been Upon seme foreign shore ; No more a wande er he will be, To sail the stormy main, But live at home, with kindred dear, No more to part again. Sleep on !—sleep on ! poor sailor boy— ‘Tis nothing but a dream ; But still tis well that visions bright Across the mind doth gleam; But when the vision has passed by, And he awakes once more, He still will be a castaway, Upon a dreary shore.
