South Classroom Building Is OPEN HOUSE NECESSARY? As a result of the de- crease in enrolment suffered (?) by U.P.E.I. this past semester, there has been an increase in emphasis on Open House '72 in order to encourage High School students to attend University in the '73-'74 year. This is a natural reaction on the part of many people involved with the University because the number of students attending U.P.E.I. is directly related ,to the amount of money re- ceived from the provincial government. Consequently, the quality of the educa- tion offered will be lower or so the theory goes. This will come about be— cause the administration will have to limit expen- ditures on equipment and faculty salaries, and, thus, the quantity and/ or quality of the pro- fessors at U.P.E.I. There may also be other ramifications which are not now apparent. Therefore, on the surface, at least, a push for more students is quite in order. However, upon further examination, this question may not be as simple as it seems. It has been suggested that this de— crease is due to a number of factors acting upon the new breed of high school students. Unlike some of their recent pre- decessors, these graduates are deeply concerned about the relevance of a univer- sity education in today's job market. There is a new trend developing today that suggests that students entering university are not doing so in order to secure a job upon graduation or to spend four years of their on the house We have a little some— thing for everyong inter- ested in: 1. If Open House '72 encourages the recruitment of students by quantityf and not by quality, then it is not serving its true purpose. If, however, it encourages students to ‘ examine a university educa— reading their own works and performing a short drama presentation. ’ In Duffy Amphitheatre (221) at 10:30 (English Department) 7. music?
