MacArthur One hundred and thirty years ago, there was born in Pictou. Nova-scotla. a boy who was de- stined to become not only the best geologist in the Dominion of Canada, but one of the best in the world. This remarkable individual was John William Dawson, whose fa- ther was born in Scotland. when he came to the New world, he prospered for a tlmefand then fell upon evil days about the time John was born. Lack of money did not stand in the way of the boy's education, however, and young John was sent to Pictou Academy, where he made rapid progress with his studies. Even as a. child, he displayed an unusual interest in plants. fus- slls. insects and birds. One day, while making a slate pencil from a piece of shale, he was amazed to find upon the stone the imprint of a delicate fern. That was the boy's first discovery in the field of geology. and so :- wakenod his desires to become a collector of speciments of rocks and minerals. , . . . 'l'o obtain the kiicwledgu he thirsted after, he, when only fif- teen years old, got a copy of Mohs's Mineralogy which taught him a good deal about the won- ders of mineral crystals. Fortified by this knowledge, the youth ex- piorcd the neighborhood surround- ing his home where he picked up additional data on the subject. at night he devoured every book he could lay hands on. covering the work of other mineralogists, so that when he was sixteen. he gave an intelligent lecture before the local society on the structure and history of the earth. It is interesting to note that this gifted son of Nova Scotla also made .1 study of the Hebrew language. At theage of forty, in 1840 Daw- son went to Scotland where he spent a year at the famous Edin- burgh Unlversity. There he studied his favorite subject, along with physics and chemistry. When he re- turned tocanada, he madethe ac- quaintance of two noted geologists- Sir Charles Lyell and Sir William Logan-working along with these men, he was able to lay the foun- dations of his fame. O O 0 John William Dawson now be- gan his researches into the secrets of the earth and traveled exten- sively in North America and much of Europe. In 1854. Canada's oldest and most famous University, McGill. honored the former poor and un- known boy. by making him its principal. Further honors were showered upon him in 1882, when the Great Queen Victoria conferred upon him the Order of St. Michael and St. George, and he became Sir Wil- liam Dawson. ills writings on some of his earlier discoveries are noted for their clarity and common-scnse views. and are still authorities on geological discovery. When this great son of our sis. I91" Pfwlnce. Nova scotia, passed nwuy in 1899, he was recognized internationally as a great man and an outstanding geologist. OPEN TO INVESTORS LONDON.
