His real claim to attention, however, came from his work in Matabeleland in the rebellion that followed the dis- astrous issue of the Jameson raid. He was chief staff officer in that affair, and earned great praise for his work. An excellent feature of his character which showed in these operations was his power of getting on well with his sub- ordinates and getting the best results from them. He emerged from the mpaign a brevet colonel while still a vasimenied major. In 1897 he was pro- moted from the 13th Hussars to he lieutenant-colonel commanding the 5th | Dragoon Guards. Col. Baden-Powell is a famous sportsman and a bit of an author. “Who's Who” makes a point of noting its subjects’ recreations, and Col. Baden-Powell’s list shows what an eclectic fighting man he is.
