CARVELL BROS, abarntts Ue towns Supt. wi wk vod T0 LET, ON WATER STRERT. O LET-—For one or more years, as insy be BOSiON STEAWERS, HE DEFENDS HIS COURSE IN IRELAND, RESPECT Tv Mr. Gladstone, replying to a deputation of Irish women, who presented a 1aammoth petition in favor vi Home Rule, said: He must deny the statement that he had re- nounced his former attitude by supporting the proposal to restore an irish parliament. He said Le was thankiul for Lae share he took in passing such Irish measures as had been made law during his public career. The whole character of the Irish contro- versy, he said, has aJtered. We do not now contemplate the dreadful alternative our |fathers faced a century ago. It was neces- sary that the late government's Irish pro- posals should have been put forward in accordance with the desires of the Irish nation, and also to make it clear that the proposals stuod within the limits of im- perial honor, safety and welfare. These ais were completely attained and they have been sustained by the singular mild- ness and tempersnuc capression which have so far characterized the conduct of Irishmen at every stage of the agi- tation. (Cheers.) Iam quite prepared to withdraw from public life if Leould believeit were better for [reland, but I am unable to arrive at this conclusion. England's in- iterest is as much involved as Ireland’s. | On the lowest grounds of civil and military leconomy it is England's interest to change in some way the present civil government in Ireland, which costs British taxpayers yearly 16 iimgs per head, while civil government in England and Scotland cost yearly but 8 shillings per head of popula- tion. On far higher grounds England ought to eoncede lreland’s request. Eng- land’s character is concerned. ‘there is a stain upon England in respect of her rela- ticus towards Ireland. | deny that the icrm separation, which opponents unscrupulously use to describe the meaning of the govern- ment’s proposais, is correctly applied in this case. ‘The promoters of the bill never 'thought of separation. We courted careful ‘comparison of .Grattan’s parliament with the parliament bill proposed. The sphere within which Ireland desires free action” which is especially in the sphere of loc”. government, would have “bcem atiained under our bill better far than it was possessed under the Graitan parliameit. ‘“*T hope treland’s triumph willcome with promptitude, with cheerfulness and with joy, and I hope there will be no intervening period of gloom,” were his closing words. — a Reparation Demanded, - A FERITISH SUBJECT IMPRISONED UNITED STATES BY MISTAKE. IN THE The Dominion Government is interest- ing itself in behalf of George Hatheway, a British subject, who, in 1882, was arrested at Big Horn City, Wyo., by United States authorities, as a deserter from the United States army. He had established himseif in Wyoming in business, and was doing well when arrested for a deserter named Heath and thrown into prisum, where he was subjected to all manner of indignities in order to wake him confess. All remen- strances and pleas of innocence were use less, and there he lay until the comumand- ing officer began to realize his mistake, and laliowed him to depart, only to find, how- ever, that his business was ruined sand himself 2 pauper. The attention of ihe United States authorities at Washington has repeatediy been called to the fact in an informal way without any reparation being made. it wil] now assume the character of an international question between the British and United tates governmeuts, and it is believed here with satisfactory resulis. Hatheway belongs to one of the oldest and must influential families in the province of New Brunswick. > ~<a — Robbers Take the Town. A reign of terror prevails in Aylmex, Ont., which for the past month has suffered throvgh several heavy robberies, perpe- trated by an organized gang who bid the authorities defiance. On Saturday the house of Mr. Gordon, a prominent lawyer, was entered and a cash box, which, for safe-keeping be had secreted in an empty stove, stolen. The box contained $400 in cash and $3,500 in promissory negotiable notes. Detectives have ubiaimed a clew to the guilty parties, one of whom is wanted in the United States fur regent forgeries, and for whose arrest iu the “United States a warrant has been issued. The man was seen in Aylmer a few nights ago, but on seeing a detective and a local constable en- tering the door of the room, he ran out of the rear door and escaped to the woods. He says no man in Aylmer will take him alive. He is one of a gang who last year were supposed tv have been connected with several heavy robberies in the Ottawa dis- trict, anda pal of Ardie, who shot and fatally wounded Constable Featters.
