Mr. Abbot, lately unseated, and Dr. Christie (Grit) were dominated. Up to the present time little interest has been taken in the election. It was not until the last moment that the Grits decided to put a candidate in the field. Some time ago Dr. Christie positively declined to face the music. Now that a contest is to take place matters will become livelier, and it is probable that some outside oratorical talent will be imported. The election wil! take place on Thursday of next week. A $55,000 Haci.—New York, Aug. 8.— Forty thousand dollars worth of securities were missed froin the safe of J. OC. Wol- cott & Co., of Broad Street. They were stolen on Friday by a young clerk, A. D. Wheelock, who was left alone to close up the business of the d»y. Me also tilled out three cheques already signed by the firm, drew $5,000 on one from the Continental Bank, and obtained on others letters of credit to the amount of $10,000 on foreign bankers. The letters are negotiable in any part of the world where first-class banking houses exist. A de- ecription of the stolen securities has been tele- graphed throughout the country.
