'l‘his is well and it the crop is properly cared for a bumper crop is assured. Much has been said as to the i'elative values and i‘elative prices of the different varieties of potatoes. As to this, the farmers have already cast the die for this season; the varleties_ whatever they may be and whatever their relative values, have probably :ill been planted and there is only a word to say on this p;irl'_o[ the subject, iiainely, keep the vaiaeties dis- tinctlv separate, when hai'\'esting the crop. Mixed potatoes will not bring_ the highest' price; they are not desirable either for the dealer or the consumer. _ _ _ _ ‘The only thing now reniaiiiiiig is to care for the growing crop. l"rom time to time live have giveii in these columns the results obtained by spiaying at lilxperi- mental Ii`arnis in dil’i'erent parts of (jaun- da as well as at oui' own Expcriinental Farm at Charlottetown. The benefits ob- tained have been two-fold, increased yield and improved keeping qualities. The in- crease in yield has been very pronounced and has been produced in such a manner as to leave no room for doubt as to the cause. llows in the same field, in exactly the same soil and growing undei' exactly the same conditions, have been sprayed while alter- iia_te rows adjoining had been left uiispray- ed. The former remained green for Weeks after the lattei' had fallen from blight, the longer period of growth naturally result- ing in a considerably increased yield both as to size and number of the tubers_ On being harvested the sprayed and the iinsprayed potatoes were se,iarately stored to ascertain the effect upon their respec- tive keeping qualities. Here again the ef- fect of the spraying was manifested, the sprayed' lots showing but a very small pei'- centage of rot while the unspra_ved showed a very considerable shrinkage from this cause. li`armers who wish to obtain definite statistics relative to these' experiments, which have been carried on for several years and until definite conclusions had been arrived at, can do so by interview- ing the Superintendent of the Experimen- tal Station at Charlottetown and we would strongly urge upon every farmer who has any doubts upon the subject to get busy at once and get the information not only as to the results obtained but as to the best methods and the best formulae to use. Reliable information on this most im- portant matter, and acting upon the infor- mation, will add many hundreds of thous- ands of bushels to the aggregate crop of' the province and, what is of more impor- tance still, will add very materially to _thc crops on the individual farms. 'l`his doctrine has been preached for many years both in the press and by agri- cultural experts. It is hoped that this year when an abundant harvest means more that it ever did before, that every farmer in the province will make~the best possible use of the knowledge he possesses and will make such further additions to it as the Experimental Farms, the Agricultu- ral Colleges and the Departments of Agri- culture, Provincial and l1`ederal, are pre- pared to give him for the asking. _.._...._.?_)0(.__;_;.._ ' . l`.ll{l'I l.l‘I.\l)I
