L879. OCTOBER 23, Reifast Fiection. . Tur following are the returns 01 the election on Tuesday : Drxon. CRAWFORD, Balle Creek. 125 -” ESS BR, Se ere 126 91 Murray Harbor Road. 34 is Vernon River i0 88 Pownall. 53 ~ Pisquicl. 18 Ab (‘aledonia.. ys 51 448 461 Majority for Crawford, 13. The majority is precisely the same a that reported in our country edition of yes- terday, though the figures are not alike. After the country edition of Tar Exam- iver was struck off we learned that the vote polled for Mr. Crawford at Pisquid was 46 instead of 58 as at first reported ; aud so made the correction for the town. This reduced Mr. Crawford’s majority to one. ‘I'he corrected report of to-day in- creases it again to thirteen. 1t will be ob- served that the Patriot of this morning re- ported positively a majority of seven for Dixon Tur Examiner gave the opposition the benefit of every doubt and was well within the mark ! The Patriot contends that there has been a ‘*strong reaction” against the Govern- ment. But, we think, the figures do not exactly bear it out in its contention. It will be observed that a very large number stayed away from the poll; and, we may reasonably conclude that those who did so ave content with the Government. A man who has a grievance, or one who thinks he has is not to be kept away from the polls by reason of a fine day for potato digging. We may be sure that every man of the Op- position —every particular inmate of the Cave of Adullam—was atthe poll on Tues- day; an:l there were only a few additions to those who polled their votes at the general election. The content and confidence of a large proportion of the electors induced them to stay at home and make the most of a ine day in the potato fields. This we believe to be the true explauation ef the astonishing fact that Mr. Joseph Milburre Dixon well nigh became a mem- ber of the Legislature. By the way, we must not forget to con- gratulate Mr. Dixon. His ambition to be- come a legislator is an exceedingly laudable one; and he is to be congratulated on having approached closer te the object of his desires than he is ever likely to do again— at least while he retains the political view® he holds at present. Belfast is also to be congratulated. Her escape was a narrow one. She will not, we venture to say, again be overconfident or apathetic in alike conjuncture. As it is, she has reason to be well pleased with her new representative. Report speaks of him asa very intelligent man, well acquainted with the District, and well qualified to represent its best interests iu the Legisla- ture of the Province. <_e- +. Launcnger. —Angus McMillan’s new vessel was launched at Summerside last Saturday, under the auspices of Mr. John Ramsay, ow- ing to the sickness of Mr. McLennan, who superintended her launching. The Journal says :—‘*l‘he launch was one of the most suc- cessful which we ever had the pleasure of witnessing. In fact, she sneaked from her blocks into deep water, and one could not tell that she ever changed her ee This vessel was built by Mr. Janiel McLennan, and without any discredit to the other vessels which he launched from the same yard, we ;pronounce her the finest looking vessel which he ever built. Naming this vessel ‘‘ Malinche,” was the first compli- ment of tle kind, we believe, which ever was id to the historical*Donna Marvina, and we one that she may prove to her owner as valu- able an assistant as theJDonna proved to her amour. i — — A vesset of some 600 tons was launched from Hon. John Lefurgey’s shipyard, on Sa- turday last. Aiter what appeared to be a first-class send off, it was found that a portion of her kee] had come in contact with a rock, which injured it slightly, but not very seriously. She is being loaded with oats at Queen's Wharf for the old country.—S. J, ‘Tur schooner ‘Jane McKay,” owned by Donald McKay, Esq., M. P. P., was lost on Tuesday night off White Head, N. S., while on passage from Boston. Crew saved. They were talking about the weight of different individuals in a certain family, and the danghter’s young man, who was present, spoke up before he thought, and said : ‘‘I tell you that Jonny ain't so very light, either, al. thongh she looks so” And then, he looked auddenly conscious and iLiesied, and Jenny bec ue absorbed in studyisy a chromo on the wall. We learn with great pleasure that the Gov- ernment has appointed Mr. Francis J. Conroy, Attorney-at-law, to the office vacated by the death of bis father. ‘The appointment will be vee of by the supporters and opponents of the Government. Tur Summerside ‘Journal’ says: This week we resret to have to record the death of twoof Mr. Edmund Kinsman’s children. They dicd on Friday of diptheria, within 12 hours of cue another, an Sunday. Mr. Kinsman has the sympathy of fhe eommynity in his sad affliction. ; 4* yon 44< 4 AleLg Correspondence. sa” We do not hold ourselves responsible for he statements or opinions of our correspondents. ad ' — - —— — iain ee Bogus Money. As a striking example of the ‘‘jump” in prices which metals have taken we hear of a purchase made in Montreal last month of 100 tons of Eglinton pig iron, which had been brought out in baliast at $14 per ton 30 days, landed on the wharves. The thirty days ex- pired on Saturday. the Lith, and on the fol- lowing Monday the iron, which had thus cost $1,400, was sold for $2,500, a profit of $11.00 per ton inside of thirty days.
