Dec. 23——E.'fcct- ive January first. the coke ovens, blast furnace and open hearth de- partments of the Sydney Steel Plant will alter their working periods from shifts to ten and eight hour shifts. Announcement to this effect was made late today by H. J. Kelley, vice-president and general manager of the Dominion Steel and Coal cor- poration, Limited. To compensate for the reduction in hours. hourly rates will be in- creased in accordance with the sys- tem adopted when this change was made by the Steel Company of Can- ada, a. year ago. and in keeping with hours of labor in the United States Steel industry. (Canadian Press) BOSTON. Mass, Dec. 23—Three hundred miles at sea, 13 plgeem, ex. hausted and battered m a fight with strong winds, found haven aboard the Boston fishing schooner, L. A. Duntcn, which arrived in ‘port today. Chance brought the vessel in the path of the birds who were borne seaward by offshore winds. The schooner was in the extreme northeast corner of Georges Banks last Friday. ' The 68y was one of the meanest experienced on the fishing grounds said. Out of a. heavy vapor which hung over the water the pigeons were literally hurled on to the ship. Some of them struck the rigging and fell exhausted to the decks.
