Long before spring hreeaes warns the St. Lawrence River valley. steel-nosed lee-breakers work to clear giant ice - fields train the shipping h nnel. Their aim is to break up ice- jams that could cause flooding in low-lying areas and to have the Quebec-Montreal channel open by late February or early March. Ocean-going ships sometimes use the channel as early as the'mid- die of March. This year the ice-breakers d'Ib- erville and the Ernest Lapointe reached a point nelr Montreal last week and started the last phase of their work. Two months earlier the transport department vessels had started their up- stream journey from Quebec. 50 YEAR? PROGRESS The policy of giving nature a hand in clearing the river was first inaugurated about 50 years ago. Then an ice - breaker was posted at Quebec Bridge to keep the narrows clear. About 1930. ice - breakers were assigned to work between Quebec and Trois-Rivieres after the high spring titles had loosened river ice. Three years ago the present system of working from Quebec and Trois-Rivieres upstream to- ward Montreal was inaugurated. The ice - breakers are strategi- cally poised when the shipping season closes shortly before Christmas. One is stationed at Trois - Rlvieres, about halfway downrlver between Montreal and Quebec City. Others are stationed at Quebec. Q Throughout Jaunary the ice - breakers move between Trols - Itivieres and Quebec trying to keep the channel clear. Some- times they have to battle ice jams up to 40 feet thick. An ice-breaker remains in Quebec City to keep ice from jamming at the Quebec Bridge and also keep a channel clear for the ferry operating be- tween Quebec City and Levis, Que. STRONG ICE-BREAKER Flagship of the Ice - breaking fleet is the 3,055-ton d'lbervllle. Now in her fourth season of serv- ice, the tilberville can attact ice jams front or rear. Her hefty how can climb on top of ice and crush it or she can turn around and chew the ice with her powerful twin screws. After clearing a dockside plact for herself and the Lapointc. the d'Ibervi.lle halted for the night to resume her duties again at dawn. Captain Caron. a 30 - year ici- eran with the transport depart- ment, said the d'Iberville is de signed not only to be rugged and selfrellant in he heaviest of ice, but also to be capable of carrying a large number of personnel and tons of cargo to the northern out- posts of Canadian civilization with comfort and safety.
