Captain Petcr Gundersen, when seen
by the Guardian representative yes-
terday, expressed a pardonable pride
in his vessel and his courtesy and
genial demeanor 'was marked. Like
the remainder of the crew, the cap-
tain is a Norwegian and he possesses
a good command of the Englishlan-
guage. He related a narrative in
connection with his vessel which re-
calls the Russo-'Japanese war of
some years ago. At the time of the
outbreak he was coasting along the
Chinese and Russian' Pacific Coast
and was passing Japan en route to
Vladivostock, the principal Russian
Pacific seaport, a city of 40,000 in-
habitants, His vessel was sighted by
Japanese'"warships'aird was escorted
to Sasebo, and there the vessel, cap-
tain, crew and their valuable cargo
were held for six weelus as prisoners
and prizes of war. On the Mikado's
birthday they were released and pro-
ceeded to their /destination, which
they reached in due time, but not
without one or two more occurrences
of more than usual interest. On their
arrival in Vladivostock that town
was in flames, a Cossack regimental
