The records of the English torpedo boats at the recent function in Bantry thus summarized by a London service journal: “The eight torpedo boats attached tothe Hecla were ter ribly detached on the passage home. Only one remained near the parent ship, one made for Appledore, and has been sent for by the Seahorse, five put into Dartmouth, and one remained by the squadron. The misery softered by the crews of these boats in a sea-way is great indeed, sleep being almost if not quite impossible; and we look forward with interest to the re- port upon the fitness of these little vessel for the work upon which they bave been employed. Machinery repairs have been trequent, the strain upon the engines being very great, and no fewer than eight first-class and six second-class boats have been consider- ably damaged by their short cruise. is °° _. A Horse that Prefers Music to Oats. New York 77ri/bun There's a horse that would rather listen to music than eat,’ said the driver of a Brooklya livery coach team, pointing to a bright- eyed, Roman-nosed, shapely nag. “The way I found it out is this: I feed a team at 4oclock in the afternoon to be ready for evening calls. Then I go home for halfan hour for my own supper. Well, usually he would have his mess all eaten up clean when I got back ; but once a week I would find his untouched, or that he had just begun to feed. It puzzied me for a number of weeks ; but One day I happened to stay at the stable allof the afternoon, and then I found what was the matter. Our b das, who lives next to the stable, has a disabled child, and one of the amusemeats he gives heris to have door some of those Italian street musicians come aod play under the window for twenty minutesorso, when the little girl throws them a quarter. This makes them come very regularly. The afternoon I speak of they were there, aod ist as they struck up that horse, waose stall is neat the door, turned his head and to listen as attentively as a persona. One day the boss asked me why I didin’t feed at the right time. I told him the musicians had been around, and related what I had discovered. He seemed to doubt the story ;s0 to prove it to him I took a harmonica from my pocket, an experiment | had often tried before, and plaved several lively tunes. The horse took his head out of the mabdver and kept it up, with ears cocked and seemed nostrils wide until [| stopped. ‘Old Opera,’ as we call him, has become a curiosity of the neighborhood, and has quite an audience whenever the band comes around.” i> + Special Notices. The world is wiser now, and knows that SCROFULA ean only be eured by a thorough purifica- tion of the blood. If this is neglected, the disease perpetuates its taint through generation after generation. Among its earlier symptomatic developments are Eczema, Cutaneous Eruptions, Tu- mors, Boils, Carbuncles, Erysipelas, Purulent Ulcers, Nervous and Phy- sical Collapse, etc. If allowed to con- tinue, Rheumatism, Scrofulous Ca- tarrh, Kidney and Liver Diseases, Tubercular Consumption, and vari- ous other dangerous or fatal maladies, are produced by it. Ayer's Sarsaparilia Is the only powerful and always reliable blood-pu iying medicine. It isso effect- ual an alterative that it eradicates from the system Hereditary Scrofula, and the kindred poisons of contagious diseases and mercury. At the same time it en- riches and vitalizes the blood, restorin healthful action to the vital organs an rejuvenating the entire system. This great Regenerative Medicine Is composed of the genuine Honduras Sarsaparilla, with Yellow Dock, Stil- lingia, the Iodides of Potassium and Tron, and other ingredients of great po- tency, carefully and scientifically com- pounded, Its formula is generally known to the medical profession, and the best hysicians constantly prescribe AYER’S ARSAPARILLA @s an Absolute Cure For all diseases caused by the vitlation of the blood. It 1s concentrated to the high- est practicable degree, far beyond any other preparation for which like effects are claimed, and is therefore the cheapest, as well as the best blood purifying medi- cine, in the world.
