hott. _states the Gazette ot the Russian
observatory at Puikovo. The superior
dehuition ot the new photographs is
due to the use of improved plates and
colored screens. which have enabled
the astronomer to obtain tlne contrasts
_ln his pictures. The best photographs
oi’ the "canals" of Mara were taken
from these, it is claimed, it would ap-
pear that the "canals" are nlled with
water or at any rate something which
has a sea green color. Further studies
of a similar kind in connection with ,
the polar cap indicate that ice ia pres-
ent there and not snow.
Turkiah Cholera Remedies.
The Constantinople correspondent or
the London Lancet gives the follow-
ing Turkish cholera remedies prescrib-
ed by old fashioned Ottomans during
the recent epidemic: First, drink infu-
sion ot Juniper berries; second,` carry
with you an agate stone or on your
neck a stone of hyacinth; third, never
fail to have in your pocket a bone ot
n dead child; fourth. masticnte pimper-
uel, and, fifth. since cholera is mostly
eauseu hy the moon, drink decoctlons
of laurel fruit when the planet Mars or
Mercury is in the aseendant. as these
planets are the enemies or the moon.

Fewer men are studying medicine,
fewer M. D.'a are being graduated. and
the number ot women in medicine is
decreasing. The Journal of tba Amer-
ican Medical association says that the
total number ot medical students in
the United States for the year ending
June 80, 1911, was 10.786, a decrease
of 1.740 below 1910. a decrease of 2.359
below 1900. a decrease ot 2.810 below
1908 ,and a decrease of 8.356 below
1904. when the highest number ot stu-
dents was enrolled. The number in
1011 .was lower than in any year since
1900. -
