AN ENGINELESS TRAIN HUNDRED MILES BY DRIVEN ONE rHE WIND. An ineilent which we believe has never had a pa sliel in railroad history, occurred last week, on the Burlington & Missouri railroad between this city and Denver, a Lineoln (Neb.) despatch. Suys It will be remembered that on Thars- | day there was a wind which amounted to a tornado here, and was worse west of us, At Akron it unroofed the round house and did some other damage, At five o'clock in the evening, when the wind was st its st started a train of eight box with | coal, that were standing on the side track at that place. Two brakes were | set, but they wefe not enuugh to hold it, | ong at, 16 : cara, if raded and it ran through the split switch without being derailed, and started | eust. The track was nearly level where the train started, but there is down grade this side of Akroo. The wind was strong that it took the train more rapid-| ly than the passenger trains over the| line more even on a level track, when it reached a down grade of course | | sv and | | the speed became something fearful. The operator at Akron noticed the} runaway train soon after it broke loose, | and seat the alarm down the line. Every- thing was ordered side tracked, nad | the crazy train had the right of way. The} canacn ball train, going toward Akron. | was Only two stations away when the | mes ave to side track came, and the} train there had only been on the side} track a short time, variously estimated | at from two to five minutes, when the engiseless train came thundering by. Marvellous as it may seem, those rua- | uway cars ran 100 miles, passing eight} stations over a track which is for a great | part of the distance almost pertectiy level, with no propelling power but the) wiod. They rao the 190 miles in less) thap three hours, and station agents and | others who witnessed the strange train, | held their breath with awe as it whirled | by, at the rate of nearly a mile a} minate. It passed Haiger at the rato) | cheap, at J. B. About half way between Benkleham and Max, the fugitive was overtaken, the coupling successfully made and the cars, after pulling the engine some dis- tance, Were brought to astandstill, It was certainly a remarkable run- away, aod we do not think the annals of any railroad will show a parallel to it. Speaking in Public. Orators, they say, are born, not made; but a man who is determined to succeed in any undertaking can generally do so. If, then, you are called upon to speak in pudlie, prepare yourself for the ordeal, Give your sabject close, clear thought ; read exiensively the cream of the best authors upon the subject then give the best thoughts to applying what has been learned by the first impression. In regard to obtaining control of the audience ic must be borne in mind that there is but little difficulty <be first time becauie mere curiosity and sympathetic interests will assureit. This fact often ruins a speaker by making him over-con- fident the sevond time thus leading to failure, A man should never assume that he is to control his audieave without the ut- most skill. A successful speaker must learn how easy it is to lose his audience. An audience will always give its un- reserved attention to anyone who is telling something understandingly that they didn’t know before. As a perma- neat investment it is worth infinitely more to impart knowledge clearly and concisely than to tell the most racy stories. An andience will give its unreserved attention when it is known there is to be something new well told. A man must talk for the sake of his audience, and not for his own sake, The multi- tude of talkers are failures because they have uo toundation for permanent snecess, have never acquired intelligent self-control, have not learned te hold ao audience. These are not gifts, they are acquisitions, A man must train himself to read wisely, think keenly, Speak only when he has sometbing worth saying, and say it so-clearly and concisely that it is no serious effort for them to take and keep the fact or theory given them. o>.
