Hazen is probably ‘today the most influential figure in Ibis native Province. Bach in the ‘nineties of last century he represent ‘ed St. John County in the House of `Comm`ons. Later he entered local politics, became leader of the Oppo- sition and on the overthrow of tht Robinson Ailininistrntion in March, 1908, became the leader of the new Government. _ As Premier of New Brunswick Mr. ;H_nzen has distinctly made good. Ai the outset he surrounded hilnself with honest and capable colleagues, and has since introduced n number lol important reforms. One of thee( iwus ill the udniinistration of thi lcrown tilnbei' lnnils, where great abuses had crept in under previous Go\'ermnents. These have been cor- rcctcil and the revenue from this source neurly doubled, which was a nmttci' of'l.:reaxt importance, as the sister Province, like our own, suffer-. eil from insufficient funds for efficient lhollsckcepillg. Other reforms effected lv\i~i'c in the auditing of pilblie ac- counts, new checks lipon the public expenditure, and an entire change in the road system, which has produced 'good results. It has been long since ‘New Brunswick had a more capable 'and efficient Government than Mr. ed ability, luceeds to the Premier- 'ship of New Brunswick. Hon. Mr. Hazen, in assuming the portfolio of Marine and Fisheries comes in direct contact with some very vital interest! of _our Island Province. Hts will 'have charge of the winter service between the Island and the mainland for one thing, and we all know how important it is to have this in capable hands. Both be and the new Premier have expressed their strong sympathy with this Province in all matters affecting our transpor- tation and freight rates, an'd~we do not doubt that within reasonable time we shall realise the benefits of their sympathetic treatment of that luestion. Both Mr. Borden and Mr. Hazen are now pretty well known in Prince Edward Island, and we trust that they will understand our wants and requirements better than the Quebec ministers in whose hands the Marine 'portfolio was so long held. As to federal matters in general Mr. Hazen seems likely to be the repre- sentative of both New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, as to a large extent Hon. Mr. Fielding has repre- sented Nova Scotia and this Province in the past fifteen years. Hon. Mr. Hazen is in the prime of ife, and his public and private life have been irreproacheble. He stands hish in the legal profession, and has proved himself an excellent leader and administrator. He comes of an old New Brunswick family, and is universally regarded as a gentleman of probity and honor. As a debater he will rank among the foremost. of his party in Parliament. He is not yet a member of the House, but it is understood that several seats have been offered him, including that of Dr. Daniel, M. P. for Saint John' County. Dr. Daniel may be appoint- ed to the Senate. Mr. Hazen will easily secure a seat and along with Hazen has given it, if indeed it ever had one of that stump. Hon. Mr. iFlernlning, the Provincial Secretary, it comparatively young man of mark-ct. i Premier Borden will add such weight to the Administration as .will go far to compensate for the reduction of eastern representation in the Cabin- In the national Shorthand Speed contest held recently in Buffalo., N.
