A special to the Chicago Chronicle from Tacoma, Washington, says: “Five hun- dred reported killed up to July Ist is record of the terrible outbreak of the great vol- cano of Mayon, on the island of Luzon, one of the Phillipine group. Al night of June 24th the volcano threw up ashes and lava in immense quantities and flames were thrown upwards considerably over 100 feet above the crate. The next day 56 bodies were recovered at a considerable distance, and the most recent despatches to Hong Kong up to July 8th stated not less than 500 were known to be killed. It was prob- able, said the despatches, that the lose of life would reach into the thousands, de- pending on tShe length of eruption. On that date lava streams and ashes had reach- ed the cities of Bacacy, Malihet and Libog and their distruction was certain. Then he re- turned to California and delivered a series of lectures through the State on the re- sources and the wonders of Alaska, tilus- trated with stereopticoa views. In this way he made enough money to furajsh him an outfit, and he was at Glacier Creek near the Klondike when the news vf the discovery came. He promptly packed up his belongings, and was among the first to reach the new camp. He tovk up a claim, but the prospects did not please him, and as otbers were disappointed in sinking their first shafts, he abandoned the camp and started down the river. His boat broke down, and he was compelled to return on foot to the new mining district. By this time pans of dirt ranging from $500 down to $125 bad been found in several claims, and he at once proceeded to develop his property. He worked throughout the season, hiring a couple of men to help him. “T have said that ail the miners who have made this wonderful find, or protited by it, are tenderteet. A few incidents which occurred at the dock when the steamer landed, or shortly after, will show how thoroughly this is true. Nils Ander- son, of Seattle, borrowed $300 of an ac- quaiptance in the summer of 1895 to go to the Yukon. He left a wife not very well provided for to provide for herseif and several smali children This she did suc- cessfully, and paid the interest oo the $300 besides. She was at the wharf to see the steamer arrive, knowing nothing of the good fortune awaiting ber except from rumor. which said that the rmturn- ing gold-bunters had “struck it rich.” She certainly had reason to hope this was true, and that her hbus- baod bad had some share of good fortune. One of the first to come down the plank after the ship had teen made fast made fast was Anderson. ,He carried a hand, and just behind him was a friend with two more. These bags and Mrs, Anderson was put into a waiting hack, and the party drove home. The Lags c»ntained some- thing over $112,000. “Another of the Argonauts, Swede, carried his dust, as many did, o the express office. He wanted to send nt “to the government at San Francisco.’ Asked if he knew how much he had, he said, “ I tank I have twenty tousand five bunner dollar.” Wheo bis sack was put on the seale the clerk told him he had nearer $42,50@0, and his eye brightened at the news.
