Fiewelling, of St, John, was the first white man to enter Dawson City. He left New Brunswick in the spring of 1896 and is now on his way home to St. John. He says that fully one half the stories re- garding miners coming out wita millions are exaggerated, It is a rich country but no much fortunes have been made as are reported. The Cape Elections Result in the Defeat of the Progressives. Care Town, Sept. 9.—The Government victory at the polls in Uitenage practically end the elections, which have resulted in the return to the Assembly of forty mem- bers of the Afrikanderbund and thirty- seven Progressives. Sir John de Villiers, chief justice of the Cape of Good Hope, will probably accept the Premierehip of the Cape Colony. Heis of Afrikander descent and is fifty-six vears old, and a member of the Imperial Privy Council. He has been chief justice of the Cape of Good Hope and president of che Legislative Council of the Colony, as well as attorney general from 1892 to 1874.
