Talking of the Maratime Provinces, the News of St, John says :—‘* Look at Prince Edward Island! It is true it has no grandriver system, no vast forests re- maining, and little mineral wealth. But it bids fair to become the very garden of North America. It has much good soil. P easily worked and lying within reach of shores loaded with mussel mud av ex- celleut manure—good for grass sand superior fer cereals and voots. Priuee Edward Island farmers will by and by be among the most comfortable and inde- pendent of their class. A Maritime Association. About fifty natives of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. resident in Boston, have formed a Maritime Provincial Association in Boston, the first regular meeticg of which was held on last Thursday in College Hall. VOL. 1L--NO, 130 i | Protection in Engiand. } ee Tke introduction of a resolution ia faver of protection at the aunual gather- ing of the Euglish Asseciated Chambers of Commerce indicates that the fair trade movement is still full of vitality. It set out that a serious and compulsory reduc- tion of wages and profits had been caused owing to the heavy import duties levied with impunity by foreign manu- facturing vations, which are reaping a ‘rich harvest of trade for their manufac- ‘tures by the English system of free imports Of course free-traders were ready to vote down such a resolution, but mechanics still leave’ free trade England for protected America, and manufacturers go on removing their establishments across the Atlantic. —_—_—_—* A Hote! Mr. Danie! De Courcy Magiili- -cuddy, justice of the peace, agent to the Mayillicuddy of the Reeks, was found dead in bed at his residence at this place, having shot himself with a revolver. At the inquest it transpired that the old gentleman had been for some time in a state of great mental excitement regard- ing the details of the Arreers act, which he stated he was quite unable to under- stand. He had been going about with a long list of tenants who had given him notice of their intention to apply to the Court. The complicated details of the procedure comple ely przzled him, and he was going about wringing his hands in a state of inten-e agi ation, There is A LUMerous tenauiry on the estate, and Mr Magillicuddy, who was advaveed in years, was completely unhinged by the the work he had to face. j —_- A Remarkable Potato Digger.
