| ; t A VOICE FROM THE FARM. “You say that my life isa round of toil?” The stalwait farmer saia, “That I scarce can Wrest from the oft-tilled soil My pittar Well, what you tell me in purt is tru e of daily bread? I am seldom an idle man But I value the blessing of rest, as you, Who have much of it never can, “ And surely, I never have worked in vain, From the spring to tha golden fall; The harvest bas ever brought waving grain; Enough and to spare for all And when in the evening, freed from care, The only land they will ever own, I sit at my farm-house door, My wife and little o s walting there, Oh, what has the millionaire more? | | ** My children may never have hoarded wealth, “heir lives may at times be rough ; But if in their homes, they have love and health, Chey will find these riches enough. | | ' [s the land that the strong right arm And the patient, fearless heart alone | Can till to a fertile farm. “TI have nothing beyond my simple wants And alittle for cloudy days: But no crim spectre my homestead haunts, Such as silver and go!d might raise, Around me are eyes that‘with sparkling mirth Or with placid contentment shine And no wealth-clogged lord upon all the earth Has a lot more blessed than mine.” ~ SE + + — DIAMOND CUT DIAMOND. A rustic-looking man sat in the smoking car of the Omahe train last Monday night, when another | rural looking person cs me in. “Is this seat taken?” asked the new comer. * No, sir; sit right down, sit right down,” said the other, making room next him. Soon the two old farmers were in conversation. “Where are you from?” “T live near Buda. Where do you hail from?” “I'm apretty near neighbour of yours; live near Kewanee.” “ Farming?” “Yes. Are you?” ‘Yes; farming and stock.” “ Been to town with stock?” “ Yes; brought up a hundred head of steers.” “I brought hogs.” And so the conversation ran on until just before | the train reached Mendota, and the two old far- | mers were right weil acquainted. Presently another man who looked like a merchant, came in and was surprised to see one of the old farmers. “Well, well, well,” said the new man “I'm glad to see you; maybe you can help me cut of a littl embarrassing trouble. I want to pay a man @ little billon the train before I get off ut Mendota and [ haven't enough. If you'll let me have $100 on my check ! lt be very much obliged.” “Certainly, I'm gled to doit,” and out came the farmer's pocket-book. But, alas! he had only $10 in small bills and a beautiful crigp $500 bill. “ You're perfeetly welcome to the $40 if that'll help you out, or to the 8500 if you can get it broken.” ‘Perhaps your friend can help us out; the 340 will hardly answer,” said the merchant, and then he apologized for making ¢o much trouble. **Well,” said the other farmer, who until now had been silently looking on, “ I can’t change a $500 bill, but [ can give you another one for it, and I think it came out of the same batch, and was printed on the same press.” And turning to the other old farmer, he added: “If your partner hadn't come just as he did, mine would have been here in a minute. I’ve been getting ready to work you on the same game ever since we left Chicago.” At Mendota four very much disgusted con- fidence men stepped off the train, and stood around in the cold, waiting for a train returning to Chicago. Hints on How to Rear the Children at Home. It you wish your children’s faces illumined with good humor, contentment and satisfaction, so that they will be cheerful, joyous and happpy, day by day, then must yeur own countenance appear illumined by the sunshine of love. Kind words, kind deeds »nd loving looks are true works of charity, and they are needed in our home circle. Never a tear bedims the eye That time and patience cannot dry ; Never a lip is curved in pain That cannot be kissed into smiles again. General politeness is a great fosterer of domes- tic love, and those who are habitually polished at home are those who exhibit good manners when abroad. When parents receive any little atten_ tion from their children they should thank them for it. They should ask a favor only in a court- eous way; never reply to questions in mono- syllables or indulge in the rudeness of paying no attention to a question, for such an example will surely be followed by the children. Parents should never check expressions of tenderness in their children, nor humiliate them before others, as it will only cause suffering to little tender hearts, and will also tend to harden them. teproof, if needed, should be administered to each child singly and alone. Never correct a child on sus- picion or without understanding the whole matter. Never say to a child, *‘I don’t believe you,” or even imply your doubts. If you have snch feelings, keep them to yourself and wait the truth will evertually be made plain. Never; disappoint the confidence a child places in you whether it be a thing placei in your care or a promise. Teach the child to share his gifts and pleasures with others, to be obliging, kind and benevolent, and the influence of such instruction will come back to your bosom and bless your latest hours. There should never be two sets of manners, the one for home and the other for com- pany, but atgemtle behavior should be always required. iil, , ~ SHE KNEW HER Business.—‘Oh, someone is com.ng up the steps, ma,” exclaimed Miss Pyr- kins to her mother, who keeps a boarding house. “Sna'l I vo to the door.” “No, indeed,” answered Mrs. Pyrkins, bustling around. It’s a young man who is probably look- ing for board. Go down into the parlor and be play ing a dreamy air on the piano when he comes in.” “Yes, I know; but someone must attend to the door. There goes the bell now.” “Well, I will run to the kitchen and send Jane to open the door, and while you are playing and Jane is showing him in I will be pounding out the table with a rolling pin.” “ But what for, ma?” “It will sound as if we had twe servants and were going to have beefsteuk for lunch.” — +e REVivAL OF HOOKS AND Evyes.—For more than a dozen years the manufacture of hooks and eyes for women’s and children’s dresses muy be said to have been dead, battens having superseded them. Bat there are indications that hooks and eyes are asain to come into use, at least to a considerable extent. If this should ‘prove to be the case, it will gladden the hearts of some who have pre- served their machinery from the scrap heap. Thirty years ago the State of Connecticut had manufactories within her territories that produced these little articles to the value of $112,000 annually at fifteen cents a gross. Previous to 1830, or thereabouts, hooks and eyes ‘Were made by hand and sold at 41.00 per gross. —<tecamermmeeerer errant peat | done at Brown’s. | enware, to be sold cheap at COoLWILL's. = eecancaea ee en | Special Notices.
