Editorial continued. y.—The| SmaLL VALUE FOR THEIR MONE Islander of yesterday publishes a letter, purporting to| have been written by the Under Secretary of State to| Messrs. Palmer and Pope, dryly acknowledging the - ceipt of their Petition, and telling them, as all the world | knows, that the subject of it had been already disposed | of. We have only the assertion of the islander that the) document in question is an authentic one. There is ne name appended to it,and it reads very much like a) make-belief affair. After all, it contains nothing mee than a gentle hint, which may be thus phrased : “Gentle- | men, there is no necessity for your troubling the cnr nial Office. You may go home as soon as you piease. | Lord Grey has-settled his business with P. E. Island, | without your advice,” and Lord Grey himself says a good deal more: he says he won't believe them. Verily, the fourteen influentials have received a wonderful return | for their money ! i Tue Sinxine Funp.—We are credibly in- formed that, since the great flare up made in honor of the Delegation two or three months ago, has turned out to be a very sorry affair—an illustration, in fact, of the | old saw— “ Keeping the word of promise to the ear And breaking it to the hope,’ some of the gentlemen who subscribed their “ fifties” —(shillings we mean)—have positively refused to plank down. This is shameful! and yet the honest men can’t will be blamed; for, we presume, they never contemplat- | ed the establishment ofsuch a sinking fund. Very neavy.—The article in yesterday’s Islander—headed the “ Address to the Governor.” We never yet heard that Big Martin is a somnambulist; but his last effort clearly shows that he has been labouring under a horrible and distressing night-mare. { | Postace.—We are glad to inform our sub- scribers in the country, that Mr. Own, having commu- nicated with the Postmaster in Halifax on the sub-| ject, will resume the former rate of postage on our Paper, unti! he shall hear from the Postmaster Genera! in England. | A Turitune Tate. ninces,” commenced on pages 100 and 101, is an admi- rably-written and deeply interesting Tale. Jt will be concluded in our next No. ( We have thonght fit to defera further eonsi- deration of Earl Grey’s Despatch, in reply to the Hon. Mr. Coles’ Memorial, until the Earl of Elgin’s Report shall have been made public, News by Yesterday’s Mail, Later rrom Mexico.—There has been an arriva: at New Orleans from Vera Cruz, bringing dates to the 2lst ult., but nothing Jater from Gen. Scott, for whose safety serious fears are entertained. Gen. Urrea has issued a proclamation, announcing the termination of peace negociations, and that the Mexicans on the 8th gave severe lessons to the hateful invaders, bY royally repulsing their assaults, and driving them to Sir positions, The Matamoras Flag says, that the last rumour is that the Mexicans, inspired by the news of Scott’s repulses at the Capital, are flying to arms throughout the country, determined to be in at the extermination. 3,C00 are reported already there and at Victoria. The Washington correspondent of the Journal of Com-. merce says it is the intention of the administration to ‘six feet, and hundreds of cellars are filled with water. i : " ‘ ; , | Oct.22.—Schr.
