When conversing the other day with one of our bright school teachers, a man who is a student of events and a man of affairs, he made a statement tousthat deserves the careful considera, tion of all our readers, He said: ‘I am anxious to get at the causes which underlie the genera- discontent among our farmers and I ask them wherever I go their opinion of their business and its prospectst Almost invariably I am told ‘tha. farming does not pay, that it is a business to be got out of as qui kly as possible, and that it is no business for a bright ambitious boy to follow.’ The evidence I get is overwhelmingly one sided for it is a very very rare excep- tion for me to find a practical farmer ‘who will tell me that there is a chance to do a profitable business on the farm.” We regret to say that it is characteris- tic of Maritime Province farmers to be extremely pessimistic about their own business and many of them are so without any just reason. Take, for instance, the small farmer, whose farm and buildings may be worth $1200 to $1500 and his stock and equipment from $600 to $1000 more. What are his resources for supporting a family of six or seven members ? 1st. He has a home more or less comfortable, rent free, worth at least $100. 2nd. He has his fuel, worth at least $25. 3rd. He has, or can have all the vegetables he needs and all the poultry, eggs, pork, lard, butter and milk, without any outlay and can have mutton and beef at half the cost of the city dweller. These edibles are worth at least $200 in a city market, and if he goes to large centres and tries to house and feed himself as well as he can on his little Canadian farm, he will find the cash outlay about double the figures we have given. Here then is an income of from $325 to $600 per year, which the farmer and his family have if they do not raise a single article for sale. In addition to this he can choose to a certain extent his own time for work. He is independent of strikes and of monopolistic employers. He can have school facilities for his children, not equal perhaps, to the city, but he hasa purity of air and freedom for his children which no wealth can afford in our large cities. He does not need to spend the money upon clothing that would be required in the city and in many ways has advantages. Of course to counter- balance this, he has in the city social advantage for his family and a chance for promotion for them and himself that he does not obtain in the country. We have just mentioned this aspect as an issue in choosing between the farm and the city. The real issue is the ability to make farm operations pay a good margin of profit. Can this be done in the Maritime Province? In the light of the experience of a number of farmers wecan name, we say unhesitatingly, yes. The money making farmer must be a business man he must work with his head as well as with his hands and he must at times be content té undergo hardships and privations as well as at times have the courage to borrow and invest money in his business when he sees a chance to make $100 go out and bring him a paying market for his crops or provide necessary equipment and thereby return him not only good interest, but as it oftentimes will, prevent great waste and loss. He must, speaking generally, be skilful with some class of live stock. He must ,breed feed ,an sell to advan- tage and be master of his business. For the man who is less a master of his business there is a lesser reward and the fact that we have to-day hundreds of farmers keeping their families in comparative comfort and pursuing business methods that would wreck men in any cther line of work shows agriculture in the Maritime Provinces to be not only a paying business, but one of wonderfu! possibilities when modern business methods are applied to it.—Co-operative Farmer. —— ——-— STRICT CARE AND ATTENTION.
