Sllillllll Wllllll UN THE Mill ‘ SEHVIEE Between Sackville and Cape Tormentine He Tells Reason Why Special Train is Not Ffun Thus Delay- ing our Mails 24 Hours At Present Time. Thequestion of N. B. S.: P. li. Lrallway carrying the island mulls to und from Cape Tormentiue- was brought up by Senator Wood at the last meeting ofthe Snekville Board of Trade and he spoke on the subject at considerable length. He showed how very necessary a special train is for carrying these mails in order that the Island people shall have the best possible satisfaction. When, these mails are carried by the regular train 24 hours are lost notonly in getting the mails to thc Island but also ln the delivery of all mall matter from the island. The question of n special train had oftcn been brought up, but the department never seemed willing to nay the railway a reasonable amountfor running such n train. Mr.Wood stated that n special train ran from Summersidc to Cape Traverse and also from Charlottetown to the Cape to connect with the ice bouts, and when the stesmers were making regular trips to Georgetown a special train met the boat and conveyed the malls and passengers to Charlottetown with as little delay as possible. The government paid Sl per mile for thc running of the trains, and this was the' sum asked for a special train on the N B I P E l road for performing the same service. The speaker said he did not consider thia out o' the _way and would be very glad to leave it to any competent railroad man to decide. Hr. Pottiuger had stat- ed thet li a train milc was not out of the way and Mr. Russell, who was formerly lu lfoncten had given his opinion that it was altogether too low a rate. The speak er stared that the cost of running a train to Cape Tormentiue and return taking one month with another summer and winter was $40. At this season the coat would be from fifty to itll per cent great- er, so it could easily be [figured out how much the railway would made nut of running a special foria few weeks in mid winter. The railway now received $6 for carrying the Island malls to the Cape and the same for carrying them from the Cape ta Saekvilll. The price was lxed several years ago. and the speaker thought it was very low, the mails to;en~l_ from the Island having more than doubled during the last few years. he \:~..l
