The result of his teaching, it is claimed. was that it was impossible of late for the whites to get labor of any kind in the neighborhood forthe plantations of domestic service. No proofs are offered to substantiate the charge, but it is quite possible that Mr. Pianving, in teaching the virtues of self-_ reliance and urging his people to aspire to laborers and servants for the whites, may have helped in producing the conditions of which complaint was made. For this he was fonlly and treacherously murder- ed, and those who were his assistants were warned to desist or leave the parish. A crime like this, while it encourages ig- norant, fanatical white men in the com~ mission of similar outrages, cannot fail to deepen the animosity of the blacks against condition. Ofall wars, aracial, servile waris the most pitlless and abominable ll in the ferocity and cruelty of its reprisals. To murder' their heroes is thesurest way ‘a great race struggle.
