No satisfac- tory evidence was forthcoming sufficient to fasten the crime upon the guilty party, though itis pretty gencrally believed that young Horne could, without much trouble, put his hand upon the criminal. A strict watch, however, will be kept up, and, should he be discovered, he will, no doubt, suffer the ex- treme penalty of the law. > Av the Stipendiary Magistrates court this morning, Horne, who was tried a few days ayo, for setting the fires in Palmer's Lane, but who was discharged owing to lack of evidence, was tried for another serious offence, that of making too free and careless a use of a revol- ver. So that he conduct himself properly in the future, he was bound over to keep the peace for one year, and in default of finding two securities of 350.00 each, he was to sojourn in the Queen’s County Jail for 30,days. Poor boy, he left this world amid the bewildering labyrinth of a grand discord, sorrow mingled in its tones. To him it has been God’s way of leading his je into the incomparable majesty and | sweetness of heavens choral outburst, whose after chords are all richly harmonins, free from sorrow, and discord, and trouble. But the waters still speak in an undertone, ‘this body lieth here,” and for those who loved him there is still “sorrow on the sea: There is sorrow on the sounding sea, A trouble ever heaving on its breast, A wail ot anguish, and of agony, An undertone of wild and sad unrest. ; The waves break mournfully upon the shore, Or surge in fitful fury ‘gainst the rock; Anon retreat with melancholy roar, Tortured and torn, and writhing from the shock. What hear we in that sad sea-moan ? A dirge-like voice, a sound of hoarse fare- wells, Despair that lurks in ev'ry hollow tone, Sadder than requiem rung from funeral bells. We catch the cry of storm-toss’d men from far, A shriek of wrecked ones thrilling ‘cross the deep, tising to God upward from star to star, As cruel waters o’er the drowning sweep. We gaze from land, out o’er the waters wide, . And think of loved ones on the ocean wave, And wonder if again we'll wander side by side; Or if the briny deep will be their yrave, Courage and youth no pity have from thee, Nor hope a spell to tame thy heartless might; Prayer cannot charm thee, O, thou cruel sea, Nor love o’ercome thee in the dreadful fight. Our Isle lies quiet, like a child asleep; The deep heart of heaven is calm and still; Must thou alone a restless vigil keep, And with thy sobbing all the silence fill ? The wail of sorrow rising from thy breast, Tells of a hidden and a nameless paia ! Will nothing soothe that anguish into rest ? So that it never, never wake again ? When will thy waves in tranquil stillness lie ? The sorrow in thy heart forever cease ? And the loud clash of tempests pass and die Into the harmony of endless peace? Oh heaven, bring seen ths longed for, happy tine, Promis:d, to bless thine own eternity ; Peal forth, with bells of joyous, sweetest chime, There shail be, ‘‘no more sorrow, no more Sea, Our next local meeting of the Temper- ance Allixsnce takes place on the 20th inst. This latter weapon |of war was an especial pet on board. On each side were mounted huge guns, ever ready at the word of command to go into eetion; and forward, on topmost deck, | stood a monster, which could turn to every | point in the compass, and fire where it | liked, with all the necessary fixings and machinery to put Souris in blazes, or take ;@shot at the man in the moon. But hush! Our officer flies at sound of bugle. Ladies are coming aboard. Hats are raised, in- troductions given, greetings exchanged, polished manners come into play, ana courtesy holds sway—this is peace. How soon those smiles could be exchanged for tears, and how readily these same ofticers, at ‘“‘their country’s call,” would enshroud these ladies in deepest mourning, or meet their defenders on a bloody deck—that would be war. The lucky possessor of your issue of that day (the 12th inst) should keep it safely.
