The Montreal correspondent of ‘Turonto Mai/, who has been interviewing a | very prominent practical railway magnate | on the subject of Sir Hugh’s intentions has the | elicited the following va tion which | will be read with inter here. - The} gentleman interviewed is sae ted to have spoken aa follows :— It is well known Sir Hugh is a far-seeing, shrewd bes ness man, who is determined to be in the van of progress ia steamship | improvements and the extension of the| cartying trade between this continent and | Great Britain. He has taken the lead already in building monster floatin: palaces for passengers, with wonderfully in- creased space for freight. Such steamships as the Parisian and those he has now in course of construction on the Clyde are the vessels that will in the early future monep olize the ocean traffic, to the exclusion of the smaller craft now generally in ase. The hesdquarters of these ships must be Quebec in the summer, as the risk of navigating the St. Lawrence to Montreal could not be entertained. Under these circumstances the railway becomes an absolute neccesity as an auxiliary for his shipping business. Then there is the uecessity uf a new winter port suitable for these ships, and within the shortest possible distance from Montreal and Quebec. There is no question that the best situated and most accessible Winter ports on the Atlantic are St. Anlrews aud St. John, N.B , with a bridge TEE } must be er and that thi LT Thi iladis mu i n ; c ? nect with either tne a mi or a hnearei wo ] be \V\ isc et i bec Railway.
