Itis described as belonging to a prin- cess of Upper India. Ia front of the clock’s disk was a gong, swung upoD poles, and near it was a pile of artificial limbs. The pile was made up of the full number of parts of twelve perfect bodies, but all lay heaped together inv seemiog confusion. Whenever the hands of the clock indicated the hour of one, out from the pile crawled just the num- ber of parts to form the frame of one man, part joining itself to part with quick metatlic clicks ; and, when com- pleted, the figure sprang up, seized a small mallet, and walking up to the gong, struck one, the first hour. When two o'clock came, two men rose up and did likewise; and so through all the hours of the day, the number of figures being the same as the number of the hour, till at noon and midnight the entire heap sprang up, and marching to the gong, struck, one after another, each his blow, making twelve in all, and then fell to pieces again. Fate of a Beer Girl. During the trouble in the regia of Charles I,,a country girl came to London in search of a place as a servant maié, but not succeeding, she hired herself to carry out beer from a ware. house, and was one of those called tub women. The brewer, observing a good looking girl in this low occu pation, took her into his family as a servant, and, after a short time, married her. He died while she was yet a young woman, lett her the bulk of bis fortune. The business of brewing was dropped, and Hyde was recommended to her asa skilful lawyer to arrange her husband’s affairs. Hyde, who was afterward Earl of Clarendon, finding the widow's’ fortune considerable, married her. By this marriage there was no Other issue than a daughter, who afterwards became James IL, and mother of Mary Aune, Queen of Echo. j una and i ' Eegland., awn Egg mdon —-~ 2-. aE - Rioting in Holland. Holland is doing wonders lately. Three riots in a week. The riot which occurred in Amsterdam on Saturday was resumed on Monday with great spirit and a full supply of brick-bats. The mob charged the police, hurling a shower of stones upon them. The police returnedthe charge, scattering the rioters in all directions and serious- ly weuoding many of them. Why the people of Amsterdam should “show their Dutch” in this matter is some- thing we cannot understand. Some Anarchist from Paris,we fear, has been tampering with their gin. - -_——— Allis not attractive that is good. Iron does not sparkle like a diamond, yet it is useful. A large number have been in contant use for eight years, and the repairs have been very trifling, in many instances none have been required, This valuable experience should be sufficient evidence of their durability, which is accounted for in the following :—It has, instead of a Linea Fire Box, two heavy Currugated Cylinders, which obviate the expense connected with all Square Cooking Stoves of being compelled to renew Linings and Grates, at least once or twice every year, The heat being radiated from the Cylin- ders to the ‘floor, where most needed, overcomes a_ serious objection to all kinds of ordinary Coal Cooking Stoves. The Cylinders are situated directly under the cover holes, and a fire may be made in one or both, thus adapting it for use either in winter or summer, with «qual satistaction, besides effecting a great saving to fuel I have also attached tho PATENT TELESCOPI® OVEN to all my Elevated Oven Wood Stoves, such as the Waterloo, Niagara, Star, &c, causing the thousands using them to exclaim— My Stoves are worth TEN DOLLARS MORE than the same kind made by other foundries, The trade and retail purchasers will please bear in mind the fact that although a great advantage 1s claimed for my own Oven above all others, they cost no more, and being the sole manufacturer and patentee, no other fcundry can supply.
