Johnny Chuck was in I dilemma. When one is uncertain whether to do a certain thing or not to do it. he is in a dilemma. Sometimes a dilemma is serious. very serious in- deed. Sometimes it isn't serious at all. Johnny Chuckls dilemma now was really serious. He was up in A small tree not far fi'oni his home. at the edge of the Old Pasture where itjnins the Green Meadows. It was it new hoine. He had worked hard and taken a great deal of paths in digging that home. Johnny had ex- pected to live there all summer; and probably sleep there all winter. and now something dreadful had hat)- pencd. Buzztail the Rattlesnake. one of the poison people. had dri- ven him out of that home. Perhaps Buzztail didn't intend to stay. Perhaps he had already come out and gone on his way. Johnny had no means of knowing. By this time Buzztail might have gone back up to the ledge in the Old Pasture where he lived. Again. he might have decided to stay in John- ny Chuck's lllldCl'El1'illlld house. The only way that Johnny could find this he didn't. dare do. Nor did he dare stay much longer in: in that tree. From where he sat Johnny could look over on the Green Meadows and along the edge of the Old Pasture. He could see Flip the Terrier still poking around looking for somebody to chase. It was Flip who had (li'ii'eii him up that tree af- ter Buzzlail had driven him out of his house. Sitting tip in that tree as he was, Johnny felt conspicuous. This means that he felt that he was likely to be seen by any one who should come along that wav. So he was anxious to get. dowli out of that tree. yet he didn't want to do it. while Flip was around.
