Canadian Finn's}- In Competition With the World What the Canadian Farmer can sell Great Britain, and under what Conditions By Dr. J. H. Griedaie Great Britain l.s at present the one great food purchasing country in the world. A few other countries like France, Holland and Italy, buy some comparatively small quanti- ties of such products. This buy- ing Ia, however, done more or less spasmodlcally. At the same time many countries export, or are in n position to export, large quantities of agricultural products vv-hicn are ui-"ually human food of one kind or another. Some of the more import. ant of those food exporting coun- tries besides Canada are the United States, Argentine, Australia, New Zeuland and India. The United States exports nndcr normal con- ditions corn, wheat, meat—chietly bacon or pork. and fruits, particul- arly apples; Argentine exports beef and wheat; Australia sends out Dairy produce and wheat; New Zeuiund ships lamb and dairy produce in grout quailtit-les and India exportes w-hent. Many coun- tries export eggs and a number export some special food product. Canada can and does export wheat, oats, barley, flax, buttor cheese, beef cattle, bacon, eggs and apples. in the cusc of only one of those articles does she hold premier place among exporting countries. namely wheat. She is thus com pelled to sell all her produce, wheat included, on a market, the only market there is, and n marker open to the world, lit-lice, against the very keenesl sort of trumpet- tiusl. When it comes to buying food the Britisber knows no favorites or Fortune Telling THE OHARLOITETOWN GUARDIAN. Fakirs Cause Sui- ._ cide in Munich - (United Press) _ MUNICH. June 12. ——-An ava- lanche of fortune tellers and fakirs of every description has descended upon the Bavarian cap- ital. The Munich police already have a record of over 300 such pro- fessional soothsayers, and are watching them closely. Their methods are varied, some using playing cards, others coffee grounds. still others astrological tables for humbugging the ignor- nut. The police might be inclined to view these fakirs as harmless ex- cept for the fact that their fore- casts have led to divorces, suicides and family disagreements. In one family recently the daughter of the house poisoned herself because oi an unfavorable astrological horo- scope furnished her by n soothsay- er. and her brother, driven frantic by a similar prediction, cut his veins. In another case a girl was told that she should not be able to marry her betrothed until four years inter. She shot herself and left n note t0 the effect that she could not benr the thought of hav- ing lo wait so long. In a third trase a couple became divorced be- calnse the wile wns told by a f0r~ lune teller that she would be nlur- dercil in case she went to the Bal- kans with her husband. H. Miniistcr of Station C. K. C. H. at Ottawa on Wednesday evening May 21st. She already stands at the top in wheat, both as to quality and quantity. Her coarse grains, barley, oats and flax are also probably tho best to trade the British market. \Ve need to gct busy and improve our store cattle or beef cattle. They are not bad _hut could be a lot better. Our cheese has been losing ground in recent years or at least until a year or so ago when we began to improve a bit. and it is now decidedly on the up- rude. Prices for most agricultural pro- ducts nre low just at present. For this reason buyers nro ever more than usual pickers and choosers. The best goods are the goods first chosen, they are the goods that bring the highest prices and they are the goods that establish a re- putation. (fommonplace goods sell slowly and establish no reputa- tion »unless it be n bud one. We have made n start. nu excellent start, in the right direction-we must keep at it. Our wheat is at. the top. so are our course grains. We can keep at it. Our bacon, if we siclli more of Iii. somewhat more uniform in duality. would be as hig-h as Danish in price quotations. The progress mode is due -to co-operntion between the farmer, the packer and the Depart. ment of Agriculture. The farmer, inspired by price according to quality, has produced more and better hogs, thepacker has paid higher price for the good hogs and has put out a better article of bacon than he ever did before, the Department of Agriculture has helped the beginner, encouraged the hesitant and graded the live hog as it wenn. to market. The re- sult has been truly wonderful in improving quality, bettering re- putstioh and lncreashg demand. We should be producing at least is a good friend to me. Sometimes I think of the old days in Adelaide, when liie was full of hope. Then there will be no more. “On the shadow of the scaffold I want to say goodbye to my friends. These are my parting words, ‘I am not guilty.’ " ON THE JOB. A salesman noticed that the man sitting next him in the hotel lob- by wore a downcasl look. “What's the trouble the sales- man inquired. "My wife told me 1o buy a Pom- eranian, but I find the cheapest I can got is $150, and that's too much." "l'll sell you a Pomeranian for seventy-five," sold the salesman without the slightest hesitation. The other man was pleased, and accepted. “If you'll excuse, me, I'll just sneak to my ofllce." said the sales- man than, and going into a tele- phone booth, he called up his em- ployer. The Canadian middleman or ealer is the fellow hard to teach. it should he tbs aim of every farmer to see ‘that he sells his produce on grade and to do his best to produce only the beet grades.
