Why should not the labors of the execu tive be crowned with all thc succes they deserve? In the case of the annual exhibitio there was a record attendance of the public. At the first annual flower show thc public patronage took the officials and others by sllrprisc_ Why did the public not extend a share of its patronage to the poultry show held this week? The reason is not far to seek by anyone with n business knowledge and an ucquuintance with the organ- izution of popular undertakings. There was an extraordinary lack ol publicity in connection with the poul- try show. The show was actually opened bf-'fore hardly anyone beyond elwso flirf-rtly interested, knew there " .ls sur-E» ..ll event to take place. Who.- ever was responsible for popularizing thc Poultry Association and its ex- hibition forgot the necessity of “ad vertisement's artful aid." The con- sequence was that very few people outside those actually concerned knew anything about the show; when it was to be held; where it was to be held, what would be on view to make it worth their wnile to vlsle elle -null; and last; but by no means least, what admission would cost them. The consequence of this lack of ad- vertising enterprise has been that the Association has inevitably lost caste and, what is as vitally important, has lost cash as well. For a com- paratively small amount of outlay they could have boosted their show over the length and breadth of the Island and reaped as n reward prob- ubly ten times the amount in admis- sion money. Throwing open the doors to the pllblic free of charge is not a very satisfactory way of obtaining an up- preciutive audience. We may say or think what we like, but experience has proved the fact that the average mall considers what is not worth paying for is not worth having. We regret thc deserving Poultry As- sociation has not obtained the pub' deserves, hut if it profit by the les unprofitable. SOME FUR FACTS Mr. M. H. Bolger of Boston, Well known to many of our rcuders through frequent contributions in the press, is the author of an educativc and timely booklet issued by the St. Geurge’s Bay Fur Company, whose ranches are at Cornwall, P. E. Is- lsnd, and St. George’s Bay, New- foundlsnd. Although much has been written and said about the \great fur farming business, much yet remains to be said and every worthy contribution on the subject adds information which will be of value to those in or contemplating entry into the busi- ness. To the booklet referred to we ,_ _pre indebted for s number of useful ` reminders and sugiest ons, some of them not new, _others original and all vsili`ili'ii'¢`.‘ - from sl statement of the fsdt that "the march of eivlllletionhellfbld-` ily reduced the number of snimsll in ;' ~- ~_ l"»-»"“-»;"‘.- ‘: .-- K ,f _;; _ _ ~ f -~:'~ ‘ .' 1'.-'A' .se-_-¢ ' -rf' ll . f. . _ f , _ _ _ -_,,~-_ “il ` -1 -»»l~ - ff, -.»‘ ...._ ~-' if » _ . » » fm -. These include`. the fox, muskrat, mink, beaver, fish- er, otter, skunk, reccoon, mnrten, D"RY EVE"-rs __b1ue and white fox. In connection with the dornestication of these, this bit of information is given! In 1918 the price of wild silver-black fox peits averaged $500 and in the same time ranch raised pelts averaged S1169. This eilectually disposes of the old fallacy that furs lose their nat- ural lustre and beauty when pm- duced elsewhere than in the wild. It stands to reason that animals pro- perly fed and cared for, and slaugh- tered when in fit condition, will pro- duce better fur than those that eke out an existence midway between starvation and plenty and are at last slaughtered when chance places them in the way of the hunter, without regard to condition. The world’s best furs will certainly be produced in captivity and will be bred up to an even greater degree of perfection than has yet been attained.~_'I‘hiS Will be found true, not of foxes alone but of all the fur-bearers. As these animals are now being ranched in this province these figures ,will afford some encouragement to those engaged in the business. slllolnsll ul> roll clllusrluls Only a few days now remain before Christmas and the joyous spirit pe cullar only to the Christmas season is 'already in evidence. The stores have been brightened up. The pros- D€l`if»Y abroad in our land is rallccted in the quality and profusion of the nods on display. The stranger visit- ing our city at present and looking into ollr stores, our warehouses, our farm homes, our barns, would at once conclude, and rightly, that we are a prosperous people; he would conclude also that prosperity is not confined to the few, but that it ll general, and if he required other proof than appearances for that, he would _find in the official statistics issued `by the Census and Statistics Depart- ments that Prince Edward Island is the richest province per head ill the dominion. With all this and those we ure drawing nenr the greut festive holiday, Christmas. ` We have a right to rejoice, and not only a right but it is our duty both to rejoice and to spread thy.- spirit of rejoicing, It is during Christmas season _ that the optimistic spirit usually gets s boost that carries it on throughout the greater part of the year; that the pessimists and the lrnockers are oblig- ed, temporarily at least, to take a back seat. Much can be done tl add brightness and life to the Christ- mas season. and in this thc stores are Sntflnk a good example. They have put on their brightest colors, brought forward their best goods, stocked up with specials for this sea- son alone, specials which will meas- ure up to the requirements of the happy, generous spirit that finds ex- pression in making others happy. Ollr homes, too, have been specially brightened. Christmas trees, special decorations, new toys, attractive gifts are being provided to make our own happy. But there are others There are the poor, those to when Christmas brings little of cheer, those upon whom 1ife’s burdens press heav- y. _These. too, should be remember- ed in order to make it s real Christ- lmss.
