The Toronto Telegram discusses the | i trade question in the following practical } Way : i Canadians who neither hate free trade | nor love protection would like to learn | wherein this country is injured bv a tarif | that reservea the home market for articles | } that Canadians can manufacture as cheaply | i as outsiders. With the aid of a twenty-five per cent. | manufactiring | duty a Toronto firm is | band instruments that command the Can- | adian market, and are as good as the best | | instruments made anywhere in the world. ' The Canadian gets his horn as cheap as | | he could get it in England or the United | | States, and the money that woald employ facturers is Kept in the country. Band jip+truments are a Juxury, and the effect of the tariff upen their production is of less importance than its effet spon the manufacture of industrial necessities like the dynamo. A thirty per cent. duty practically excludes the American dynamo from the Canadian market. Has the ‘effect of this duty been to increase the cost of the dynamo? Not atall. Can- adian dynamos are just as good as Ameri- can dynamor, and competition between Canadian makers keeps the price dawn to the Jeyel of American prices. errr NEWS NOTES. Arrangements have been completey whereby the Canadian Post office mone order system will be operated direct from Australia instead of through England as heretofore. A despatch to the Londen Times from Rome declares that the stories of the representatives of the Pope relaxing hes- tilities to Italy sre unfounded. The des- patch adds that Cardinal Yon Hohenlohe, brother of the German chancellor, and head of the Liberal party in the Sacred | College, had not seen August, Tenn., from an employe of the Panama Railway at Colon, which states that there are Oa the isthmus crowds of well edu- cated crattsmen of all kinds who are dy- ing of hunger and sickness bronght on by exposure and neglect. Since the revival of work on the canal the con:pany had hired only negro laborers at sixty to This equals 27 to 31 cents American money. A cablegram was received at the depart- ment of agriculture at Washington from the agent of the department in Loadon, announcing that the English officials thought they had discovered a case of pleuro-pneumonia in one of the cattle shipped on the Maryland. To learn whe- ther pleuro-pneumonia exists in this country, an inspector was ordered to Ken- tucky woexamine the herd from which the animal is known to have come. British authorities report a slow but perceptible increase in the shipment of high-class woolen goods to the United Statee. If they were wise, however, they would hold their peace about such a mat- ter. The feeling at the present time is such that anything whieh tends to show that the existing tariff encourages the im- port of foreign goods is likely to raixe a demand for a change that will reverse the position. Final arrangements are being made fur the construction of the great American university to be erected under the super- vision of the Methodist Church, in the suburbs of Washington. The endow- ment now amounts to over $700,000. The university will be surrounded by 90 acres of high and beautiful ground. The gen- eral plan provides for three buildings, probably cuunected. It is imtended that the whole project shall involve $5,000,600. A writer from Georgeville, in the Water- loo (Ont.) Advertiser, in commending Mr. Rider, the Liberal M.P. for Stanstead, mentions among the things in which he excels Mr. Colby, the old member, that he is “the holder of mortgages to such an extent that he is considered one of the wealthiest men in the county.” Mr. Rider seem. io have uvne very well in a country that a guod many of his fellow Liberals abuse as being ou the read to commercial death. To be the holder of mortgages to an extent to provoke such admiration is an achievement indeed. A despatch to the London Times from Shanghai says that the efforts ef foreigners to reach the Chinese wounded met with ama!) success. The wounded Chinese mostly remain at Simenting, between New Chang and Moulden, the state of the country preventing the Chinese medical staft and the foreign volunteers from pro- ceeding there. Wounded stragglers have reached Moulden and New Chang, and some of them have even reached Tien Tsin, where they have been attended to, but no succor has reached the main body of the Chinese wounded. The arrival of 14,000 bales of cotton at Vanchester by way of the ship canal will be very welcome to the shareholders and to the citizens, for the City Council is deeply involved in the undertaking. The caual was built to bring cotton to Man- chester, but hitherto the raw materia] for the etable industry of Lancashire has con- tinued to come as before through Liver- pool, makinz the restof the journey by rail. nearly a year’s tighting, during which it has sustained heavy losses, has at last got its handin, but the battle between Man- chester and the canal on the one side and Liverpool and the railways on the other is by no mean= over. It has only begun. Meanwhile the Lancashire cotton spinners are already feeling the advantage of the canal indirectly by the lowering of rail- way charges, Home Secretary Asquith the other day wanted to get rid of an anti-gambliog dep- utation without offending them, so he sug; gested that racing might be dealt with on the principle of Jocal option. FP. Hunter, poultry editor of Farni-Poultry A hen to lay prolifically must be in perfect health, must be in condition, and here is based the true theory of the value of Sheridan’s Condition Powder—it promotes the general good health of the fowl, gently quickening digestion, and stimulating al the various organs of tke body as well as the ovaries, to perform their functions.” At this season of the year the use of Sheri- dan’e Condition Powder is very valuable for laying hens aud young pullets. By its use now they will get to laying earlier when the price for eggs is very high. I. S.
