ISLANDEBIB DEATH IN CALIF- ORNIA-The death occurred in San Diego, Californiagon January 2, oi Silas Gamble, a native of St. Nicholas in this province. I-Ie was a son of the late William Gamble of that place, and when a mere lad came to Summersid and served his apprent- iceship as a printer in the Pioneer and Journal ofllces subsequently re- moving to the states, and eventually settling in New York City, where he became an honored and distinguished member of the craft. Going to San Diego about twelve years ago from New York he served as a printer on the Evening Tribune years and later worked as a proof- reader. Ill health forced him to re- sign about about four years ago. He is survived by his widow, Edith H. Gamble, oi National City; six daugh- ters in San Diego, a brother Gordon in Sufileld, Conn., and sisters. late Mr. Gamble it will be made a trip from California to P. E. Island a couple oi summers ago and wrote a very interesting account of it in the Maple Leaf, 0i Oakland California. The late Mr. Gamble, who is a nephew oi Mr. W. J. Muttart oi Summerside, and well known on the Island, left a request that his body should be cremated and his ashes sctatered over Sacramento Bay. frhe request was carried out by his iam- lly. The late Mr. Gamble from creeping paralysis. He was visitor to Sumnierside three years ago when he was the guest of his uncle, Mr. Muttart. I0!‘ Congratulations are being extend- ed to Mr. and Mrmkussell Callaghan, Ebbsileet, on the birth oi a son born January second. _ u Mr- A. D. Mcrkel, Superintendent of the Canadian Press for the Marl- time Provinces, paid a "flying visit" to the city yesterday. l-Ie came by mail plane from Moncton and en- joyed the eliperienc: immensely. Evidence has accumulated during recent weeks to indicate that tltere will be more than the usual share of contentious issues before the legis- lature this year. but overshadowing all other questions will be that oi finance, and it is in this department that the House is expected to take the most drastic steps. The Legislature will probably accept the guidance of Hon. J. W. Jones in framing its new financial policy, but there is bound to be much criticism and suggestions from the Opposition side oi the House. This will be Mr. Jones‘ first session as Minister of Finance, but he has made a close study oi the province's fiscal problems ever since he was elected a Conservative member from the south Okagagan riding fourteen years ago. When Premier S. I". Tolmie reorganized his cabinet a few months ago Mr. Jones was trans- ferred from the speaker-ship to fill the post held since the 1928 election by Hon. W. C. Shelly, who found the great to continue at the head oi such a busy department as that oi finance. Ever since that Mr. Jones has been working long hours at his office hero framing a financial policy whose chief features may be summed up in his recent statement.
