by the solid array of the temperance
orders, the governing bodies of the
Presbyterian, Methodist and Baptist
b .dies and by many clergymen of other
denominations. And we had also the
pledges, vrritten and signed by the
leading temperance men in the House
that they would' oppose the principle
of license. Among them was the
written pledge of Hon. Donald Far-
quharson, published in these columns
that he would not “under any circum-
stances” support a license law for the
City of Charlottetown.
And how do matters stand today 'Z
The law has been passed and $4,000
of license moneys received by the very
men who most selemnly pledged them-
selves not to legislate in that way. It
was carried at the final vote by a
majority of one vote only. _ Any one
of these supposed opponents of license
-Hon. Mr. Farquharson, Hon. l\lr.
Sinclair, Hon. Mr. FJrbes, Mr. D. A.
McKinnon or Mr. S. E‘ Reid- to
name no more-could.by his single
vote have defeated the measure,
They all consented to the act and
deed by which 'the license sys-
tem is brought it. It then
