OCTOBER. I. 1B5. _ Blood Thirsty Revenge In his stirring broadcast address to his army and the Italians generally yesterday, MUSSOLINI admitted that what Italy was after was revenge for the humiliating defeat at Adowa. Other ex- cuses were offered but the emphasis was laid on revenge. Il Duce expressed the pious hope that his Ethiopian expedition would not assume the character and importance of a European conflict. Vain hope. He has been assured in the plainest of plain language ‘by the council of the League of Nations that aggression on Ethiopia would be followed by economic sanctions, and should that fail, collective warfare by the meni- bers of the Lgague would follow. When once ‘the conflict begins no one can predict the out- come, but this we know, hell will be let loose. The prayerful hope of everyone is that even at the twelfth hour means may be found to turn hiussoum from his mad course. Liberal Paper's Straw Vole The results of straw votes sponsored by newspapers is affected to some extent by the politics of each newspaper and the community in which it circulates. Ontario newspapers have already published the results of several of such contests showing the BENNETT Government in the lead. Now comes anotherreturn even more significanL 'There are two newspapers in Kin- cardine, Ontario, one Liberal, one Conservative. The Liberal Review-Reporter published on Sep- tember 26th the final result of thecontcst which it has been conducting for several weeks. It ihows : - . exports to the United Kingdom totalled $32,669,- 964 compared With $23,122,261 a year ago, an increase of 41 per cent., while our exports to the United States were $24,906,302 compared with $17,251,415 an increase of 44 per cent. Exports to countries of the British Empire amounted to $38,787,234 compared with $29,601,537, a gain ofi3i_ per cent., and to foreign connn-ie, $31,- 950.502. compared with $25,647,838, a gain of 24 per cent. The only offsetting arguments which Mr. MAcKENzu-z KiNo and his candidates in this Province have been able to advance are even more ridiculous than their talk about trade being “strangled.” In one breath they condemn the Empire agreements on the ground that these arguments antagonized foreign countries and caused them to raise their tariffs in retaliation against us. In the next breath they claim the Empire pacts were not responsible for increasing our Empire trade, because our exports to the United States have increased in even greater proportion since the agreements were negotiated. It does not require a profound knowledge of economics to see that these arguments are flatly self-contrzftlictory. ' "The Liberal Way’ The following extract from Mr. B£NNi:'r'r’s speech at Winnipeg, the Sifton Press stronghold, is both significant and illuminating and a warn- ing to electors to beware of a Party that votes $3,000,000 on the eve of an election : Discussing the methods adopted "by other parties to meet the démands of Government, the Prime Minister. referred to “the Libcrill way” under MACKENZlE KING which he said had brought “Bcauharnois and the Montreal Bridge."
