IA British government source con- firmed Saturday that an assassins- tlon plot was arranged by men be- lieved to represent two small or- ganizations of emigre: from East- ern Europe. "One of the organization: was reported to be centred on the Con- tinent-" the source laid. "and the other in Britain." British security men watched the ports and checked on visa applica- tions. to keep out known anti-Com- munist extremists. A foreign oifice spokesman said local police also took "logical action against the gest cat - and - mouse chase here since the Second World War, with large number of people hostile to the (Soviet) regime." Even the most far-fetched and melodramatic of the tips reaching Scotland Yard were checked. in addition to the usual bomb-froin- the-roof and poison-in-the-pudding reports, there were some more in- tricate and detailed: such as the plan to mine the River Thames out side London. The mines were sup- posed to be placed in the path of a boat bringing the Soviet leaders on a visit to Greenwich. That report set off a close check on former naval men from East- ern Europe and especially on by- elo-Russians who served in the czar's navy before the Bolsheviks took over. But throughout those tense 10 days, nothing more materialized than a few fireworks set off by. British pranksters and a few ob-l scene comments hurled at the vis- iting Russians by some outspoken critics. British police rounded up even these on a just-in-case basis. They were hustled off to court on disorderly conduct charges and let go with a stern warning and small ines.
