educational institutions for girls
and women. But Japan has not yet
come to as full a realization as ‘West-
ern nations have of tne signidcance
of the role played by women as so-
cial factors. It is common observa-
tion among Americans that that the
careers of Japanese diplomatists vis-
itors and residents in the United
States are greatly furthered by their
wives or daughters who have good
knowledge of the English language
and tact in adapting themselves to
American usages. For Japnn’s at-
tainment of social eglnlity with weBt-
ern nations, nothing could he more
urgent than the education and mod-
ernization of her women.
