After that ii:-at meld. however, you may mold a eat deal ior very little -- Just as you please. The arnou-nt needed for your sideia tint. meld varies as the game progresses. At the beginning of the game. you need to points. That amount is reduced to to points (the smallest possible three-card meld) it your total score is less than eero. This happens when you lose more than you win .on the very iirst hand. Later on in the game you usually have enough oi a plus score to take a loss oi this sort without going into the red. In Caneata your score is added in lull at the and oi each hand. so that you always know your exact score up to date. When that com- plete score . roaches I500, the amount you need ior your side's iirst meld goes up from 50 points to no points. It stays at the 00- point mark until your score reaches 3.000 points -- and then you need 120 points ior that first meld. Those amounts -- 60 points. 90 points. and 120 points -- iniluenca your play. You practically never have much trouble putting together a mold that counts up to 50 points. l-iowevcer. no points is oiten quite a chore; and 130 points is some- times impossible. Fdrtunately, it isn‘t necessary to scrape together all your points with one group oi cards. For exam- ple. you might meld 50 points with three kings and iour sevens: or you might meld 90 points with three aces and three nines. You almost invariably need wild cards to reach the count or 120 points. Save these simple installments. Ii you're a beginner, you'll soon be able to proiit irom the tips given in the second part oi each article. It you're an experienced player, save the iirst nail to teach the game to others. For Experienced Players -— 5 when you need 90 points ior your iirst meld. you cannot assume that your partner is bound to have the count. .It may take several rounds to develop the count, and in the meantime he will be un- able to pick up the discard pile. - For this reason it is important ior you to make the ilrst meld it you can conveniently do so. Natur- ally, the question is: when is it convenient? Ii you can take a discard pile oi almost any size at all, do so and meld your 90 points. It doesn't pay to bother with a pile oi only one or two cards, however. unless your meld uses up very iew cards. It you must make the meld irom your hand. without benefit oi the discard pile, don't use more than six cards ior the meld. It's bad enough to be lcit with only five cards in your hand; don't make it any worse. For example, supmse that alter drawing a card you hold: A—A-A Q-Q-Q 10-8-7-5-4-2 You wouldn't meld on the iirst Irsmy...riaouec...d.iaa|..... teeetgvlclrer...debattev oriit The new Ceiemie Chick slang. team in the fee: at "crumbles" -'-'l'0P°_rtldee|oeklltedtsi. ll" INK ht aadi on I a particle of balanced ntlea.
