\ * raw-rm: Imp mm by Kevin Gauthier Good Heavens! Where has thetime'gone? Is this really the last SUN before Chrisunas? God, I don't believe it. But editor John assures me it is, so it must be so. Well, having accepted that fact, I must therefore sutmcn, my sensibilit— ies (whid'l have long been dormant)- to coupose sane sort of a pre—Cnrisunas mesSage. I realize that Novenber has not yet expired, and. many of youhavenotevenbeguntothinkofthe - approaching Yuletide, but I refuse to let the last issue of the SIN for this semester go by without offering a‘ few Christmas wishes. You know, this world being what it-is (in a word, miserable) I cannot help but'wonder what type of response would be received to a "Help Wanted" ad, that might be placed in any news— paper, reading as follows: "Help wanted. Messed up, miserable world requires fat, happy old man for employment as trouble—shooter. Applicant must be warm, loving, gentle, and perpetually optimistic. A hearty laugh exercised frequently is a necessity. Persons admitting of prejudice, iitpatience, intolerance, or a vengeful nature need not apply. The successful applicant will be expected to spread .peace and joy throughout the world, and foster love and understanding between all men. Work with children involved". ' If there is one thing for which I envy children, it is that they have such a man. Although they do not very often appreciate fully the significance of all these attributes of good olde St. Nick, they nevertheless derive a great deal of joy from the simple understanding they have of him. It is unfortunate indeed that, I THE U_.P.E.I. Although I dare say most of us no longer believe in Santa Claus, I fervently hope that we allbelieve in those things which he represents. If only they were more widely accepted and practiced, this world would ‘ be unbelievably pleasant. We have a long way to .go. ' But, we'have to start sanewhere, and there's no better place than right here at UPEI. We have a small ‘camrunity here, and each‘menber has at ‘leastonethingincammwithalltheOthersL that being our presence at the university and our desire to learn. Of course, there are many- differences that separate us and cause conflict. But the sclution lies here before us, and is accessible. Such blessings as tolerance, patience, open-mindedness, kindness, affection, humility, and gentleness can be learned, and outside of ’a monastery, a university is the best place to learn them. All it takes is a little thought, a little effort, a tiny measure of self-restraint, a ' V. ‘. generous ammmt of trust in others, and a desire to make saneone happy. It really doesn't scund all that difficult after all. Anyway, it's worth sane thought over the holidays. . Good luck to everyone in your final exams and papers.
