The Boers are fighting for the right to deny them to @ majority of their fellow citizens, including many men of American birth. And aothing could be more absurd than for American politicians to pretend that it is really the battle of a republic against an arrogant monarchy — the struggle of a liberty-loving people for independance, It is,on the contrary, the desperate fight of an armed oligarchy for the retention of its tyrannous privileges ; and, behind that, for the hegemony of South Africa. If Britain wins, American mioere on the Rand will have citizen rights. If the Boers win, they will con tinue to be taxed while without possessing @ scrap of representation. ESTEEMED EXCHANGES. AWFULLY SOLD LITTLE GIRL. Srr,—I am a little girl that was at the Kindergarten concert and heard the gentlemen talk about apple. I went to get an apple when the gentleman kinily aeked us attheend. I took twoand dida’t take evena bite of them ull I got home. Then I wanted to give a piece to my sister Sarah and my brother Tommy, but we couldn’t cut the apples and we could’nt bite them; they were harder than stones, [ was awfully sol2. Tommy wouldn’t be- lieve they were apples at all but psinted wood; but I think they must be since the gentleman said so. Paps and Mamma never saw such apples before but thought they’d stand long. Can you tell me what they are ? Roser. Sin,—I read in the Journal that there is to be a general election right after the assembling of Parliament. Well, there will be two parties to this game. Oom Pav. Victoria, Feb. 5, 1900. BOUGHTON ISLAND NOTES. Nathan Allen, Joseph H. Allen and Malcolm Allen succeeded in clabbing or killiog a number of seals last Friday, the 26th instaat, which came into the ( ove on drifted ice, probably from the North. They are a fine lot, and each of them will probably vield from five to six gallons of oil, besides beautiful fur. This is the first time in the history of thie litle Isle that seals have been killed or clubbed on floating ice. It speaks well of the daring and intrepidity of theee men in their perilous adventure on floating ice. Ed. Allen and James Allen went last Sunday around the ehore and thry spied a huge se:l baekirg on the board ice. Ed. Allen secured & heavy club and attacked him. If be did the seal attacked him, and then there was a desperate struggle for some time. After a long fight Allen succeeded in braining the seal. He is a good load for a horse.
