Lenten Meditations E Prom T_he Times, London , A 1 A THE GROWTH OI‘ FAITH It is a not uncommon experience to meet. those who. perhaps after "why years of doubt or pveiiive scepticism, have come to acc t the essentials oi Christian belle yet are conscious of some disappoint- ment. In the earlier stage oi their lives they found faith impossible. Then fuller knowledge, the clear. ing away c-i supposed obstacles. or some event. in their ii-vc-s which gave them a changed view or God, the man and the universe, brought about what the old-fashioned di- vines would have termed their "cc/n- version." There was u sense in which. for a time. St. Paul's phrase seemed justified by this experience and for them "all things had be- come new." Yet‘. before long faith proved ior less satisfying than they had been led to expect. For one thing, it proved tantaiizingiy intermittent; it flickered in the wind, instead oi burning with a steady flame. An- other unexpected and disheartem. ing fact was that, although the old fallacies which made faith impos- sible had been exposed and dismih s-Bd. new vague qucstivonings be- gart to arise and to suggest new doubts. The tuiain iruih is that exper- iences of this type needvnot cause the least discouragement. Almost always the faith that endures best grows slowly. and is not the pro- duct of some sudden emotional re- action. "First the_ blade, then the ear, then the full com" is abun- dantly true oi faith. What matters. then, for every Christian is not to distress himself ii at the moment. his faith seems inadequate or fluctuating, but to take care that it is given every chance of growing and then to wait patiently for its increase. t Wedding inniversary A very enjoyable evening was spent at the lovely new home of Mr. and Mrs. Preston Wood, Cross Roads, uu ’i‘i1ursday evening, Nov- ember 28th. 1946. when their friends and relatives gathered to celebrate the tenth anniversary oi their marriage.
