Now, in meteorology the weather may have played and is still playing, an important part, but as a means of add- ing to our knowledge and forming a true study of atmospheric changes its usefulmess is almost exhausted. Fur- ther advance ssary if we are to successfully forecast local storms, fogs, is nece rain, snow, hail, moderate tempera- ture en and the like ,but this advance is probable only by the efforts of competent scientific students, chief- ly physicians and mathematicians There must be the opportunity for scme Galileo, Kepler, Copernicus and Newton if we are to lift the art of weather forecasting from its present piolemaic stage into the stage of true theory as they lifted astronamy. The oppportunities needed can probably be furnished only by Government, be- cause the present establishment is a Gevernmental one and its services will be needed in the work, and also be- @ruse meteorology is a general terres- trial science, and, like geology, ts toa great for private resources. The time involved in such investigations as are needed is entirely uncertain. Some of the improvements, the forecast of fag, for instance, would come very easily. A single year of systematic investiga- tion by a competent person with prop- er assistanee and an expenditure of Pirhaps $5,000 would probably accom- piish it. Others, as the true and com- picte theory of local storms, might not be completed for a ceniury. I have es- timated that three competent physi- cists, left to pursue their investiza- ticns for ten years without disquiet and given proper encouragement and assistance, would probably be able ta so Improve our art of weather fore- casting as to satisfy all ordinary re- quirements The cost would perhaps be $10,000 per year, but the resulting benefit would be a thousand or ten thcusand times that annually. The emote benefits are so enormous that even greater risks would b flzeble.—Review of Reviews. = Seuthern New Mexico, In a paper read by Dr. Swope before the Kentu ky Medical Society recently, he summarizes the accepted points in the treatment of this disease, namely, a dry climate, having a maximum num- ber fair days and minimum humid- ity, with slight range of temperature, a moderate degree of high altitude, and ample facilities for outdoor life. Among the data made by Dr. Swope in this sonnection is that of permanent, or 2ven Jong-continued residence, Florida is umsuited for such patients, the low altitude ,the humidity and the heat of the summer rendering this region al- most untenable during the summer mouths; nor does North Carolina, with her pineries, fully meet the require- ments r her most noted resort, Asheville, has an altitude of only 2,256 feet, while her temperature ranges from 100 degrees to 6 below zero. Both research and experience have led to the conclusion that Southern New Mexico comes nearer to fulfilling what is required for the advantageous treatment of pulmonary complaints and especially to be mentioned is the bigh plateau southeast of Silver City, partly which runs the little mountain stream Mimbres, until it loses itself in the dry, sandy plains. This plateau, about 4,500 to 5,000 fect in al- titude, about 50 miles long and 49 wide, is sheltered on every side by hig mountain ranges and peaks, and has constant winds from the northwest and acress west, its maximum temperature is 9 degrees, and here an invalid may be out of doors 330 days in the year,~ Philadelphia Record.
